Women's Game Previews - Round 12

Woodville Warriors v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at St Clair
Woodville and South fought out a close encounter when the sides last met in Round 3. South were able to set up the 5 point winning margin in the second quarter when they outscored the Warriors 21 - 15. For the other three quarters of the game there was only a 1 point difference in the output for both sides. Woodville's scoring options have been improved by the recent inclusion of Ingrid Richards who now has 4 games under her belt this season and is averaging 11.5ppg. For the Panthers, Claire Johnson (15.8ppg and 6.7rpg) has been ultra consistent, producing a double digit points return in her last 8 matches. The performance and numbers these two players produce in this contest could have a major impact on deciding the outcome of this match. Woodville's form has improved as the season has progressed and their poor opening quarter against the Eagles last start ruined any chance they had of victory. South will enter this match with more confidence after being outclassed by top side Sturt last round. The big question is will the Warriors draw level with South on 4 wins after this round?

West Adelaide Bearcats v Central District Lions, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Port Adelaide
With Norwood hosting Sturt, the Bearcats have a golden opportunity to close the gap on one of those two sides when they face the Lions at home. Now in the second half of the season those sides looking to play finals cannot take the game lightly against the winless Lions, any a slip up could prove costly. In the first clash against the Lions, the Bearcats put together a dominant four quarter performance which was led by Nikita-Lee Martin who finished with 25 points. The expected return of playing coach Sam Woosnam from a break will only add to the woes of the Lions. West will look to contain Lions recruit Amber Land who is Centrals' most productive player, averaging 15.1 ppg and 13.4 rpg. Centrals coach Winston Holland has added Casey Banwell to the team in recent weeks and she may well see minutes this weekend as he looks to counter the depth of the Bearcats.

North Adelaide Rockets v Forestville Eagles, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Hillcrest
North Adelaide will be keen to bounce back into the winners circle this round after their loss to Southern Tigers at home (North was the only top five side to lose that round). That loss now has them sitting on equal points with Southern with the chasing pack not far off the pace. Forestville on the other hand had a narrow win over Woodville, doing the damage in the first quarter. When these sides last met, Forestville were convincing winners by 23 points 66 – 43, with North having a disappointing second quarter when they were outscored 14 – 5. This only compounded issues from the first quarter when they were outgunned 23  - 14. North's lineup will be quite different this game - North's leading player Jo Hill did not play on that occasion, Emma Pawlowski who top scored for North in that match has not played since round 7 and Carla Boyd is also out. With top place up for grabs should Sturt fall to Norwood, Forestville should pack too many options for a North side that has been inconsistent at times during the season. Forestville has lost only 1 game out of their last 5 encounters whereas North has only one win from their last 5 matches. Forestville's form would see them start favourites.

Southern Tigers v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
Southern has completely turned their season around. After suffering 4 losses to start the season, they have now won their last four matches with 3 wins against sides sitting above them on the premiership table. Eastern enter this match after a double overtime loss to West Adelaide but are expected to boosted by the inclusion of promising 184cm Junior Stephanie Talbot who will offset the potential loss of Alex Wilson who is not expected to play. Tigers Coach Willie Jennette now has a settled line-up with Ashleigh Spencer who is averaging 13 ppg and 9.0 rpg entering this match after recording a season high 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win against North. Eastern's Tess Madgen was the standout player when the sides last met, finishing with 37 points and 10 rebounds - if she produces anything like those numbers it will go a long way to helping her side secure victory. Tigers import Robyn Jennings had a quiet game offensively against the Rockets but is capable of compiling big scores. Her impact will be important along with the contributions from Maddy Cunningham, Gilly Hendrie and Stephanie Gates who are the major scorers for the Tigers.

Norwood Flames v Sturt Sabres, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Mars
At full strength and on recent form, the Norwood Flames may well start favourites against the top placed Sabres. However last match against Centrals, Jess Foley did not play and Rebecca Duke only saw 4:22 of court time due to injury. If these two players were to miss this important clash, this could alter the predictions and the outcome. Sturt has been the form side during the season but a number of their wins have been by less than 10 points. Last match both sides were convincing winners - Sturt by 31 points against South and Norwood by 30 points against the Lions, although the Flames were not at full strength. When the sides met in Round 3 Sturt prevailed by 5 points 62 – 57 but Monique Bowley and Hannah Richards were not playing for the Sabres and Jess Foley did not play for Norwood. If Sturt were to lose this match then their hold on top position would become a little shaky for the first time this season. With top playing third this clash should be a high standard affair.
