Women's Previews - Round 8

Central District Lions v Sturt Sabres, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Starplex
A tough night ahead is expected for Centrals coach Winston Folland and his crew as they host the unbeaten Sabres who took care of the Bearcats last round. In recent games the Lions' Dayna Roberts, Amber Land, Fiona Perso and Maryanne Eime have been their big performers. Land will be tested in restricting the rebounding capabilities of the Sabres' twin towers Monique Bowley and Anna Maycock. Bowley and Maycock will have plenty of support from Caroline Burgess, Brooke Sidebottom and Bree Farley who top scored for her team last round. Although Sturt have only narrowly won their last 2 encounters, it is difficult to see the Lions holding the Sabres to a respectable score in the top v bottom clash.

Eastern Mavericks v Norwood Flames, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Adelaide Hills
Last outing Eastern were disappointing against the Panthers when they struggled to find scoring options to support Tess Madgen. The return of promising juniors Alex Wilson and Cody Lange does give the team more offensive potency. With the inclusion of Jess Foley (27 points) Norwood returned to the winners' circle last round against the Tigers at home. Former Maverick, Amanda MacDermot (nee Williams) who has been in good form will be keen to perform well against her old club. Norwood has a number of quality players and it will be interesting to see how the Mavericks react to the loss last round.

Southern Tigers v Woodville Warriors, Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
The Tigers' only win this season was when they hammered the Lions in round 5. In that game they had 6 players in double figures, Rosalie Cutri leading the way with 18 points. Tigers Coach Willie Jenette will need that same team performance if he is to secure a win against the Warriors. Woodville enter the game buoyed by their victory against the Rockets last round scoring 24 points in the last period. In that match Claire Christie top scored with 23 points which included five 3s, and she also had 7 rebounds. In her debut match for the Tigers junior Alexandra Ciabattoni scored 17 points against the Flames and will look to reproduce that form this game. For the side that loses, a finals berth is almost out of reach, and this should ensure that the match will be a closely contested affair.

Forestville Eagles v South Adelaide Panthers Sat, May 8th, 6.30pm at Wayville
Forestville suffered their first loss for the season against Sturt three weeks ago, before handling Centrals last round. With a backcourt that includes Jess Fergus, Jess Mahony the Eagles are still the quickest team in the league, though their interior defence was found wanting against the taller Sabres, and South may look to exploit that in this game. South are coming off a good win against Eastern in which Claire Johnson led the way with 27 points including 7 three pointers, and although the Panthers would not be favoured to win this game, a three game winning streak would give them enormous confidence heading towards the halfway point.

North Adelaide Rockets v West Adelaide, Sat, May 8th, 8.15pm at Hillcrest
With both teams losing last round, a lot is at stake, the Rockets now holding on to 5th place and the Bearcats sitting in 3rd place. West Adelaide enters the match without the services of playing Coach Sam Woosnam. The loss of Woosnam (17ppg, 8rpg) will be a big blow, as she has produced big numbers all season. The Bearcats have Kerrin Webber, Nikita-Lee Martin, Trudy Holland and Irene Sourlatzis as their prime movers, whereas, the Rockets rely heavily on Jo Hill (13ppg, 11 rpg) to get them going and keep them in the contest. Marisa Stabile, Bec Lock and Shannon McKay have been reliable and amongst North's leading scorers. The return of Tania Dhu and Carla Boyd would be valuable if they are available (both missed last game). How West cope without Woosnam as a coach and player will be interesting.
