Early Season Summary

Three rounds in, and the 2010 Central ABL is already proving to be the most even on record.

In the men’s league, all but Centrals have notched up a win, and Tracy York’s Rockets are the only undefeated outfit. In the women, 2009 Grand Finalists Sturt and Forestville are without a loss, and only Southern and Centrals are yet to win.

North’s men have perhaps been the biggest surprise to date, their win over Forestville coming without Luke Mapunda or Pero Vasiljevic. Sturt’s women have also turned heads, their 3 and 0 start including a win over Norwood.

Of the foreign players, Forestville’s 6’5” Hawaiian forward Riley Luettgerodt has had the most impact, scoring 33 and 36 in his first two games. Brady Brink is providing 17 points per game for Woodville, and Centrals’ Amber Land has averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds in her three games.

The big story of the women’s league is the performance of Tess Madgen and the Eastern Mavericks. Madgen, returning to Adelaide after a two year stint at the AIS which included a trip to the World U20 Championships, scorched the Central ABL with 26 and 27 points in rounds 1 and 2, and her 37 against Southern equalled the 2009 season high from Forestville’s Jess Mahony.

36ers Brad Hill (Eastern), Darren Ng (Sturt) and Chris Molitor (West) are all making an impact. Hill scored 28 and helped the Mavericks to their first win last week, Darren Ng’s 26 was the difference for Sturt in round 1 against South, and Chris Molitor’s 32 against Centrals was a career high.

Of the Lightning players, West’s Nikki Martin and Sam Woosnam have led the way, with both averaging close to a double double, while Forestville’s Mia Newley has also started the season well.
