The President of Fiji His Excellency General (Ret'd) Jioji Konrote took time out to visit Team Fiji at Central Primary School inside the games village ahead of the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu during the weekend.
The President was in the country for the University of the South Pacific graduation as he is the Chancellor.
H.E. kept his promise to see the athletes, after they presented their itatau last week on Wednesday, and encouraged them to do their best as the whole nation is behind them.
“I am so thankful that the management agreed for me to come and say hello to you all, I promised back at home during the itatau that I would see you again,” Konrote said.
“I just wanted to say firstly, congratulations to our football men for winning their first game today (yesterday) against Tuvalu.
“To the rest of you who are yet to compete, our wishes are with you so try hard and I told you before you came; the whole nation of Fiji is behind you with our prayers.
“I have no doubt that you will make the nation proud. As we speak the Prime Minister and the Government and all the Fijians know that you are here, you are representing our nation so try your best as they all send their regards and best wishes.”
“The visit by our President would have motivated the athletes in the sense that the team presented their itatau on November 22 and at that itatau he gave the blessing of the country and encouraged the athletes to participate to their very best,” O’Connor said.
“He was able to be on hand to reiterate the same and to continue to support what we are doing.
The President, who is also Patron of FASANOC, provided a quantity of bottled water to ensure the athletes stayed hydrated, although it was something that was supposed to be provided or will be provided by the organising committee, it was a gesture on his part to be able to do this for the team.
Team Fiji Chef de Mission Wayne O’Connor said the presence of the President and his support will really go a long way with the athletes.
The President returned to Fiji yesterdat; ahead of the opening ceremony for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games thagt was held held on Monday night.
