A good crowd enjoyed a great day of Grand Final football at Keith Dunne Oval on Saturday.
Bundabergs' Brothers Bulldogs won 3 out of 4 Grand Finals on the day. This was a great effort, only losing the Senior Grand Final to ATW Eagles by 2 goals in the end after ATW had a stellar season at the top of the ladder.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start, going goal for goal with the Eagles & led 4-2- 26 to 4-0- 24 at qtr time. However, with Under 17 League leading goalkicker Joel Perry-Warren being stretchered from the field in the first qtr with a sickening ankle injury after kicking 2 early goals & not having the services of fellow U 17 premiership player Brennan Dempsey (injured in the earlier game), the Bulldogs were forced to find other avenues to score goals. The tight tussle continued in the 2nd Qtr with both teams having the same amount of shots at goal but the Eagles kicked straighter to lead by 5 points at the main break. The 3rd qtr is often regarded as the Premiership Qtr & the Eagles demonstrated this by playing strong attacking football to lead by 3 goals at the last break, 12.8. 80 to 9.8. 62. Waves started very strong in the last qtr & looked like they may run away with it, but to Bulldogs credit they fought back with increasing momentum helped by Lachlan McGill with 3 goals in the qtr, only to run out of time in the end. For the Eagles, Stedman Medalist, Michael Blair was good, Pat Power kicked 6 goals & youngster Jai Trotter was judged as Best On Ground. Runner Up Stedman Medalist, Lachlan McGill was the Bulldogs best also kicking 5 majors.
In Reserve grade, both teams started strongly with Bombers Captain/Coach & Coulthard Medalist, Dean Stanley leading from the front & Clancy Puruntatameri likewise for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took a slender 2 goal lead into the main break with both teams playing hard, clean footy. Once again a team was able to gain the ascendancy in the 3rd qtr with the Bulldogs taking a 9.6. 60 to 4.2. 26 lead into the last qtr. Bombers Senior Coach, Kevin Brown played well, helping his team hold Brothers to 2 goals in the last qtr, with the Bulldogs winning 11.6. 72 to 5.6. 36. Kurt Dempsey from Brothers Bulldogs had a super game & was named by the Umpires as the Best On Ground.
Home club, Bay Power played Brothers Bulldogs in the Under 17s but got off to a slow start with the Bulldogs leading 8.2. 50 to 1.2. 8 at qtr time. The Power team would never recover from this but held the Bulldogs goal-less in the last qtr eventually losing 7.16. 58 to 14.6. 90. Best for Brothers Bulldogs was Joel Perry-Warren who kicked 4 goals including 3 in the 1st qtr. Jack Donaldson was good for Bay Power, also kicking 4 majors, while Tyler Simpson from Bay Power was the Umps Best On Ground.
Brothers Bulldogs lined up against the Hervey Bay Bombers in the Under 15s & started very nervously not scoring a single point in the 1st qtr to the Bombers 3.3. 21. Mitchell Parsons then got the Bulldogs on the board kicking 3 second qtr goals & holding the Bombers to 1.2 for the qtr. The Bulldogs again outscored the Bombers in the 3rd to trail 5.5. 35 to 6.6.42 at 3/4 qtr time with League leading goalkicker, Lachlan Dempsey, kicking the Bulldogs' 2 goals for the qtr. The Bulldogs came out full of of run in the last qtr but wasted opportunities early to finish a nailbiting game 8.9. 57 to 7.6. 48 victors. Alastair Smith was very good for the Bombers, as was Lachlan Dempsey for the Bulldogs with Nash Kuorikoski the Best Player on the Ground.
