The time has come after months of planning and training the Mackay Crows Under 16 outfit are ready to showcase their skills against the best of the best in North Queensland this weekend in the home of footy in paradise – Airlie Beach.
In the coaching box will be Craig Widdowson as head coach with assistants Gary Downes, Jeff Neumann and Matt Bateman by his side.
The Crows have a number of players to look out for this weekend with Gold Coast Suns Academy players Harry Arnold, Adam Fedor, Tryell Lafituanai and Josh Gardner expected to lead the way.
Harry Arnold will be running through the midfield this weekend which is a different role he has had in previous years.
The tall and skilful player said he “is excited for the weekend and the new challenge which awaits the team.”
He also added “it’s my birthday on the Friday so it will be good to get a win against the Capricornia boys.”
The championships are being held at the home of the Whitsunday Sea Eagles in Airlie Beach, which will be of great benefit to the Crows as they have a number of Sea Eagles represented including Tryell Lafituanai, Logan Milligan, Josh Norris and Josh Durnsford.
Assistant coach Matt Bateman said “we trained up in Airlie Beach last Saturday, and went through the finer details of the ground, such as the wind direction.”
Bateman also added “I can’t remember the last time there wasn’t a howling gale blowing down the ground.”
This can only be an advantage to the Crows as they have all previously played at the ground. The Regional Manager for AFL Queensland in Mackay, Jeff Neumann said that he it’s “fantastic to see each club in our region represented in this team. Some players have been travelling from Bowen and Moranbah each training session in Mackay, which shows their commitment to representative football.”
