The 5 Mackay girl's representing the region as part of the Central Coast Cobras, played exceptionally well in the State U16 Championships at North Cairns AFC. The inaugural Central Coast Team finished 4th overall in the Championships, which was a fantastic result considering the team only met each other 2 hours before the first game. They played against teams from Brisbane, Cape York, North QLD, Gold Coast/Darling Downs and PNG.
The five girl's representing the Mackay Region include Kirsty Swindells, Sharon Horne, Hannah Hillman, Taylor Cowie and Rebecca Riddle. The girls were coached by Pioneer High School Year 11 coordinator, Kiah Lanham, who was extremely proud of the way the girls conducted themselves both on and off the field.
"Hopefully by giving these girls opportunities like playing in state championships will boost interest in the sport. Then we might be able to have our own league next year," said Lanham.
AFL Mackay would like to congratulate Hannah Hillman, who was selected as part of the QLD U16 All Stars Team for her outstanding efforts throughout the carnival.
