Hawks stay on a roll
Despite an ever-present injury toll and many of their squad still to enter the fray, the Manunda Hawks keep rolling on – their latest effort an eight-goal defeat of Cairns City Lions on Saturday at Cazalys.
It was a case of déjà vu as once again the Lions were competitive without getting the points, while injured player-coach Clinton Gribble could again praise his team without getting carried away.
And once again Daniel Lewis put his hand up for mark of the year with another athletic effort that defied belief.
The Hawks’ 18.18 (126) – 10.11 (71) win was always in hand as the hosts took a two-goal lead into quarter time and extended that to four majors by the main break. A six-goal third quarter ensured the defending AFL Cairns Champions would improve their record to three wins and a loss despite massive injury setbacks.
Gribble finally tested his dodgy hip – a result of a lateral quadricep tear in round one – with a light run on the weekend, but is still expected to miss at least next weekend’s game.
