History Made at National Water Polo League Finals

Returning to Melbourne for the first time in over 20 years, the National Water Polo League finals that were held over the weekend (11-13 March) did not disappoint.

Both Sydney Uni Lions and UWA Torpedoes took home their first Gold Medals in the Women's and Men's finals respectively.

A huge congratulations to all teams, but in particular to our NSW teams walking away with medals; Sydney Uni Men's and Cronulla Sharks Women's both taking home the bronze. But a special mention to Sydney Uni Lions Women's team who took home their first NWPL Gold Medal! Well done ladies!!

The top 6 Men's and Women's teams travelled to Melbourne for what was a great weekend of Water Polo.
Men: Sydney Uni Lions, UNSW Wests Magpies, Victorian Seals, UWA Torpedoes, Drummoyne Devils, and Cronulla Sharks
Women: Brisbane Barracudas, Sydney Uni Lions, Cronulla Sharks, Fremantle Marlins, Victorian Seals, and UWA Torpedoes.

Men's Results
The Bronze Medal match saw Sydney Uni Lions and UNSW Wests Magpies take to the pool. In what was a goal-for-goal game with both teams taking it in turns holding the lead, it was the minor premiers, Sydney Uni Lions, who were victorious, taking home the bronze, 10 goals to 7.

The Gold Medal match was one no one predicted, but it did not disappoint. After fighting it out for over an hour, home team the Victorian Seals netted the final goal in the dying seconds to take UWA Torpedoes to a penalty shootout, after an 8-8 full time score. In what we're sure felt like the longest 10 minutes of their lives, the visitors from the west, the UWA Torpedoes took home their first event NWPL Gold Medal, after winning in penalties 13-11 over the Victorian Seals.

Women's Results
It was a 3rd v 4th place play off when the Cronulla Sharks took on the Fremantle Marlins for the Bronze Medal. What started as another goal-for-goal match, it was the Sharks who swam away with the win, finishing strong in the fourth quarter to defeat the Marlins 9-6. #FinsUp

The minor premiers versus the runner's up was always going to be a great match up. Both the Brisbane Barracudas and Sydney Uni Lions won their respective semi-finals to face off for the Gold Medal. In a match lasting an hour, the two teams went head to head, with the Lions reaching a quick 2 goal lead, but Barras were quick to respond to level the scores. Going into the second half, Sydney Uni had to dig deep with Brisbane leading 5-2. They fired up got one up going into the final quarter with a 7-6 lead. It was Lions all the way in the fourth quarter, with Sydney Uni powering through and taking home the gold with a 12-8 full time score! Congratulations to the Ladies for their first event NL Gold!
