2009 Tahunanui Grand Slam

A stunning day in Nelson on Tuesday for Day 1 of the Tahunanui Grand Slam. 14 mens teams and 12 womens teams from all over the country and a men’s team from Chile battled to gain a spot in the quarterfinals schedule for Wednesday. Brendon Heath was back in his hometown as No 1 mens seed and with new partner Greg Lindsay-Brown looked on form to take out the title. The other Nelson pairing to look out for are Patrick Shone and Ben Glue who won the qualifier to book their place in the quarterfinals.

Nelsons top female player Anna Chamberlain and her new partner Bailey Gair of Hawkes Bay were seeded 4th. 3rd seeds Debbie Hill and Melissa Ruru followed on their good form from Sumner Beach last weekend (finished 2nd in the Christchurch leg of the McIntee Hire National Beach Tour).

2008 Brightwater Beach Classic

After heavy rain last week the Air NZ Holidays Brightwater Classic was finally held in near perfect conditions on Sunday. 10 mens teams and 6 womens teams battled it out on the sand at the Brightwater Beach Club. Pat Shone and Ben Glue defeated Nic Turner and James Greenland 2-0 in the mens final while Melissa Duff and Ashleigh Hancock beat Sara Baldwin and Dana Whiting in the womens 2-0. Due to the postponement there was a smaller field than expected but was great to see a large number of young players coming through. The winners all recieved travel vouchers to help them get to tournaments on the upcoming McIntee Hire National Beach Tour which kicks off in Christchurch on Jan 3rd. click on more for full results.more
