2013 Masters are on their way

Former Rugby League greats including Wendell Sailor, Scott Sattler, Martin Lang, Matt Sing, Ben Roarty, Craig Greenhill, Barry Berrigan and Wally Fullerton Smith will pull on their footy boots again alongside record number 1600 participants for the 2013 NRL Masters Carnival at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast next week.

The four-day carnival will run from 6-9 March at Runaway Bay Seagulls Rugby League Club, with 64  teams entered from NSW, QLD, VIC, and ACT making the 2013 event the largest in its seven-year history.

Kangaroos, QLD State and All Stars representative, Wendell Sailor, who will run out as part of the Butchers Old Boys squad from Thirroul, said he was excited about feeling like a rookie again playing in his first Masters Carnival.

“Masters give us the opportunity to continue to play Rugby League after we retire,” said Sailor.

“When you look at the ages playing next week, we have men in their sixties, seventies and in their eighties.

“That to me is proof that this game is timeless.”

Teams from across Australia will travel for the annual event with entries from  Woolgoolga on the mid-north coast of NSW, Melbourne, Bathurst, Mt Isa, and the remote Queensland mining towns of Middlemount and Mt Isa, with a number of teams having competed in the annual carnival since its inception in 2007.

Celebrating their seven-year anniversary at the tournament are the Coodabeen Bunnies, Raymond Terrace Magpies, Dalby Diehards, Runaway Bay Old Boys, FNQ Cyclones Green, Sarina Old Crocs, Ipswich Rock Wallabies, St Doms Old Boys, Melbourne Thunder Masters and West Belconnen Ugly Warriors.

Masters Rugby League has been specifically designed with rules that cater for players who are over 35 years old and no longer wish to play competitively.

The rules and the spirit of how the game is played have been modified to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants.

The Runaway Bay Masters is supported by the Queensland Government’s Regional Development Program.
