New Plymouth BHS win Super 8 for third time

The New Plymouth Boys' High School first V basketball team have claimed the Super 8 basketball trophy for the third straight year.

Boys' High triumphed after seven other North Island boys' high schools and colleges vied for the title in Tauranga last week.

The New Plymouth team won their first Super 8 basketball title in 2010 and repeated the effort last year.

“I'm really proud of this team. They fought hard, each and every game," said Boys' High coach Brendon Baxter.

"We really wanted the three-peat and everyone was determined to go out and get it."

Boys' High won all three of their pool games, beating Gisborne Boys' High School 93-43, Rotorua Boys' High School 88-49 and Palmerston North Boys' High School 67-59.

In cross-over play, New Plymouth beat Tauranga Boys' College 81-74, then beat Hastings Boys' High School 81-71 in the final.

Captain Lachlan Fenwick was named most valuable player when he was selected in the tournament team, along with team-mates Jordan Harries, Beauden Giddy and Derek Albertsen. Four of the team - Fenwick, Harries, Albertsen and Ben Crombie (injured) - have played in all three Super 8 victories.
