Dragons will give nines a try: NSW country's best to gather at Glen Willow

WHEN Mudgee Dragons players Jarred Robinson and Hamish Bryant attended the NRL’s highly successful Auckland Nine’s last year, they had an epiphany - a nine’s tournament in the Central West.

That epiphany will come to fruition on February 27 and 28 when Glen Willow hosts an Auckland Nines style tournament in which teams from around the region and beyond are invited to compete.

One of the brains of the exhibition tournament has been Mudgee Dragons official Craig Lang, who along with a committed group of senior players and committee members have been working tirelessly to get the tournament off the ground with the help of sponsor, Peabody Energy.

“We’ve got everything in place now and it’s all organised - the grounds and referees and everything,” Lang said.

“We’re just chasing sides now, we have nine confirmed but only five have paid their nomination fee.

“We’d like to get 16 teams so we can use the same format as the Auckland Nines, if we get more sides we’ll just extend the draw.

“Hopefully all the sides will be keen after starting training in the new year and we can fill the spots.”

So far the only Group 10 sides that have nominated teams are Lithgow and Mudgee, with the home side nominating two teams.
