Forget Santa's elves, try a Christmas Eel

Nathan Hindmarsh was a welcome visitor in Bathurst yesterday, spreading a bit of Christmas cheer as part of the NRL One Community Secret Santa campaign.

The former Eels star visited a handful of stores including Big W and Target, where he handed out $50 gift cards to local shoppers before paying a visit to sick children at Bathurst Hospital.

“I am here for secret Santa, I’m here handing out vouchers to lucky shoppers. We’re trying to surprise people who are doing their Christmas shopping,” Hindmarsh said.

“Myself, Mario Fenech, Petero Civoniceva and Gordon Tallis are out in rural and regional areas of New South Wales and Queensland spreading some Christmas cheer.

“Next week we will have NRL clubs going out into their local communities and doing the same thing.”

After ending his playing career this season, Hindmarsh stepped into the role as community engagement officer for the NRL and he said the opportunity to be involved in campaigns like this were a fantastic perk of the job.

“We will also go to the hospital and visit some children up there. We will hand some stuff out up there and hopefully put smiles on some people’s faces.

“I think it’s a great initiative. It’s the NRL giving a bit back to the public and I’m very happy to be part of it.”

NRL clubs including the Broncos, Knights, Roosters, Warriors, Eels, Dragons and Cowboys will perform their secret Santa duties for seven days beginning next Monday. A number of NRL clubs will also host Christmas parties for special fans and charities.
