John Coates Announces Retirement - Congratulations and Thanks
John has had a long and fruitful association with Australian Schoolboys which goes as far back as his days with the Commonwealth Bank in the 1980s, when he was primarily responsible for the generous sponsorship provided by the bank. John retained his interest in and association with Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League after his appointment to the New South Wales Rugby League by becoming adviser to ASSRL at National Championships. In this role, John observed and analysed the processes and procedures, and made recommendations for continual improvement to the running of the Championships, including the development and implementation of the current judiciary procedures. His presence at each Championships has always been something to look forward to, and he has always acted with the dignity and good grace that underpin all his actions.
John has attended and been instrumental in the organisation of ASSRL Council meetings for almost twenty years, and his advice to Executive re changes within the game and future strategic directions has been extremely valuable. We were fortunate that John was able to accompany our 2010 team which toured England, Wales and France, in the year of notorious weather.
John’s fantastic contribution to Australian Schoolboys Rugby League was recognised with the award of Life Membership of our association. His friendship, diligence and good sense will all be missed, but personal relationships will certainly be maintained.
