LIFE MEMBERSHIP CITATION

DAVID MACLEAN

David Maclean is currently the longest serving school teacher from the Northern Territory on the Council of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League. David has a myriad of experience, coaching and administering Rugby League at school, district, state, national and international level. He has also contributed immeasurably to the junior and senior levels of Rugby League in Darwin and the Northern Territory.

Prior to being the elected delegate to the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Council, he was actively involved in school coaching. He successfully coached schoolboy Rugby League from 1992 in Katherine, where he won two Northern Territory titles, and, after moving back to Darwin, his team at Palmerston High School won another 15 years state title in 2000. He has also conducted after school competitions in Darwin for 15 and 18 Years divisions, creating a pathway for progress to the Northern Territory team.

David’s direct relationship with Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League commenced with his appointment as the Northern Territory teacher representative on the Council of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League. Here he has been a constructive and able member, making valued contributions to many of the issues and changes which have been implemented by this Council for the benefit of school students. He has performed this role in two blocks, from 1997-2005 and 2008 to the present, a total of 14 committed years. Since 2011 he has been the ASSRL Liaison person for the 18 Years Affiliated States Championships.

During this time the Northern Territory at both the 15 and 18 years levels, has always been competitive and produced many finalists and winning teams. The NT has also contributed quite a number of players to the Affiliated States representative teams who have gone on to represent at NRL and State of Origin standards.

In 1998, David began his coaching at the Australian Championships in Canberra with the 15 Years Northern Territory team, where the NT were the successful champions of Pool B. He continued his coaching at this level in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2005, where he had much success. His abilities were appropriately recognised with his appointment as Manager of the Australian Affiliated States 18 Years team in 2004 and 2005. In 2005 his team participated in the international between his Affiliated States Team and the British Amateur Rugby League Association. In 2008 and 2009 he was also a part of the first Combined Affiliated States 18 Years team to participate in the restructured Pool A.

David’s contribution to Rugby League in Darwin is legendary. He is one of their most successful junior coaches ever at his beloved club, the Nightcliff Dragons. He has held Executive positions at Nightcliff, the Darwin Rugby League and the Northern Territory Rugby League and in 2011, as Chairman of the Darwin Junior Rugby League Committee, was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the NTRL

Professionally, as a teacher, David’s extensive skills were also recognised by his education system as evidenced by his appointment as a Deputy Principal and as a Consultant to the Mathematics Curriculum for the Northern Territory and South Australian Education systems.

David has always been a staunch supporter of the development of Schoolboy Rugby League in the Northern Territory and the Affiliated States. His resume is incredibly impressive and his contribution to Schoolboy Rugby League invaluable. David Maclean is most deserving of the accolade of Life Membership of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Council.
