Midpoint of the season clashes between Victoria and Norths Devils in Brisbane left both teams in despair after losses.

The Under 16’s top of the table match resulted in a 24-18 loss making it their first defeat.

From a poor start to the game, ball-dropping and penalties gave Norths field position. It was enough to capitalise giving them the ability to score three tries in the first quarter, 16-0.

Off a quick play the ball with Winger Harry Ma’o out of the dummy half sprinting 60 metres sealed the first try of the day for Victoria, 4-16.

Due to an error in their own half before halftime saw Norths score a try to lead 20-4 at the break.

Victoria started the second half with halfback Chevan Papatua providing space for Antonio Sanele down the left edge passing off to Ma’o to score his second try of the day, 8-20.

From the kick-off, Victoria came down field on the back of a penalty giving hooker Haele Finau a try next to the posts with a successful conversion by Jacob Reedy-Bartlett narrowing Norths lead to six points.

With ten minutes to go, Norths Devils crossed the line to extend their lead to 24-14.

Victoria had some chances to score again to win, however a late try from Reedy-Bartlett was not enough to push their score going down in their first defeat of the season 24-18.

Tries: Harry Ma’o (2), Haele Finau (1), Jacob Reedy-Bartlett (1)

Goals: Jacob Reedy-Bartlett (1)

In the Under 18’s game, Centre Kelma Tuilagi scored down the left edge in the seventh minute giving Victoria a 4-0 lead.

At the end of the first quarter, good ball movement by Norths saw them score a try under the posts to hit a two point lead over Victoria, 6-4.

With both teams in an arm wrestle, scores were unable to be budged.

Poor defence from Victoria saw Norths score a try on their right side making it 12-4 at half time.

Norths Devils scored two tries after trading sets forcing their lead to 24-4 with a quarter left on the clock.

Victoria’s Fullback Pio Nakubuwai answered with their second try of the day converted by Sale Finau taking the scores to 24-10.

Halfback Dylan Vea Te Whare kicked a massive 40/20 giving Victoria more field position and through a long ball to Sale Finau gave him a try in the left corner.

Finau converted his own try to give Victoria a sniff of victory however ran out of time going down to the undefeated Norths Devils 16-24.

Tries: Kelma Tuilagi (1), Pio Nakubuwai (1), Sale Finau (1)

Goals: Sale Finau (2)
