Ballarat WAC round March 16 and Portland WAC wrap

GTA will send 4 teams to Ballarat on March 16 for the last round of WAC (Western Affiliates Cup). Please speak to Ricky Simmonds, John Herron or Rohan Greaves if you are interested in playing. Ladies are especially encouraged, and don't be overly concerned about your playing ability.
The small team that travelled to Portland performed superbly in a very even competition that included Mt.Gambier!

The men lost to Ballarat as we stumbled out of the bus and were playing before they had wiped the sleep out of their eyes - let alone stretch and warm up. The next game was a draw with Mt.Gambier with a lot of score line defence required. In the final match Geelong defeated Portland.

The RAAF's Red Roulettes did a 20 minute aerobatic air show above the fields during the Geelong v Portland game. It was AWESOME, but massively distracting. Players weren't subbing or defending well because they were looking up in the sky watching the barrel rolls and the close formation flying. The red roulettes flyover is an annual event at Portland for the 'Make a Wish' foundation - although Portland Touch claimed they put the show on for us! Others say WE were putting on  show for the pilots, and that's why they were flying so close to game.

The women never lost a game and in the last match against Portland had zero subs, so the 6 ladies had to work really hard. Thanks to Ricky Simmonds for standing watch on with wing during the two earlier games (with the kind permission of the opposition) so the women could at least catch their breath.

The mixed matches were scheduled immediately after the women's games, so the ladies never really got a chance to recover. These games also all went in Geelong's favour. Those on the sideline were definitely impressed by the skills shown by Tommy R and Cam - actually, those on the field at the same time were also impressed. Patrice also 'carved', and thanks to the WAC administration for allowing Patrice to play for Geelong in the women's and mixed division.

A huge thankyou to Ricky Simmonds for driving the bus down and back. We got back to Geelong just after 7pm with only 1 rest stop.

Congratulations to Dave Cramp for being officially badged by Chica to referee level 1. Good whistle tone Dave, just work on staying out from behing the ruck. Chica handed out 4 level 2's and a bunch of level 1 badges amongst the 18 different referees that blew the whistle - of which 3 or 4 were youngsters.

Congratulations to Portland Touch for putting on a great day. The canteen was well attended.

A final call for those in Geelong wishing to play in the final round of WAC in Ballarat on Saturday March 16. Mens, Womens, Mixed and Over 40's Mixed will be submitted. Make yourself known to Ricky, Rohan or John.

Ballarat also put on a 'ball' on that Sat evening. $20 will get you a meal with drinks at bar prices. You need to let Tim Cromb of Ballarat know that you will be attending. By all accounts this is a rip roaring night of fun.
