Round 9

League Women - Uni Rebels v Lightning (Thursday)

The Uni Rebels used a last quarter surge to lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a close fought 48-40 win against the Lightning. The win relegated the Lightning to the bottom. The game swung back and forth for most of the game with the Rebels holding a 26-23 lead at half time and the Lightning taking over just before the start of the last quarter 34-32. Danielle Ponter (14.3ppg) from the Rebels started their last quarter 16-6 run to victory with a pair of buckets. These were followed by a trey from Tiayana Sing (8.3ppg) to give the Rebels a 39-34 lead after just a minute and a half. They then held on for the win…only their second of the season. Ponter led all scorers with a season high 26 while Dominique Carbone (10.7ppg) hit 14 for the Lightning.

Razzle Storm v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jets stopped the Razzle Storm 77-40 for their sixth win of the season. They keep a firm grip on third place at the moment just one game behind Ansett & the Eagles. Tikesa Docherty-Cole led a contingent of four players in double figures with 21, Erin Geer 11 and Kylie Duggan & Tahnee Maxwell 10 apiece. The Jets led 17-10 after one quarter, 38-25 at the half time break and they blew the game wide open with a third quarter 18-5 run. Lailani Triffitt led the Storm with 17 and Erin Boyd added 11.

Ansett v Eagles

This game was a thrilling, nail-biter from the start with the Eagles finally winning 73-70 over Ansett to end the Blues undefeated season. Ansett held a narrow 26-23 first quarter lead that evaporated by half time as the Birds tied the game up at 39 all. The Eagles then went ahead 58-56 by the end of the third quarter. During all of this action the lead kept changing continuously and the last quarter proved to be the same with the outcome only decided in the last four minutes. The Blues were up 64-62 with 4:22 remaining when Eagle Jaylene Boundry hit consecutive treys to put the Birds up 68-64 with three and a half minutes remaining. Tal Yakov from the Blues hit a bucket to make it 68-66 but the Birds replied with a FT and a bucket to be up 71-66 with two minutes remaining. Yakov (24.5ppg) hit another basket to get the Blues within three points at 71-68, but Lillian Williams iced it for the Birds with a pair of free throws with only 30 seconds left. Ieasha Friel (26ppg) from the Eagles led all scorers with 29 points, Michelle (10.8ppg) Friel hit 15 and Alysha-Marie Williams 13.      Men

   Round 9

League Men – Essington Cannons v Palmerston Power (Thursday)

Tobiasz Hose (34) and newcomer Deba George (30 including 6 treys) combined for 64 points to lead the Essington Cannons to a narrow 103-100 victory over the Palmerston Power. The Power also had a high score pairing of 63 points between Garrett Hall (32 @ 27.5ppg) and Willie Shackleford (31 @ 23.2ppg), but they still fell short. The addition of former NBL, SEABL star George is likely to bestow championship favouritism on the Cannons who boast a number of players who can shoot the lights out! However, the Power did put up quite a fight right to the finish as the game was only decided in the last minute. The Power trailed 81-73 at the end of three quarters but put in a sustained last quarter drive outscoring the Cannons 27-22 but fell short. Lending a hand to Hose (28.3ppg) & George were Deola D’Brown Folarin with 20 and Travis Ellis with 12. Ben Streeter helped out for the Power with 16 (5 treys). This was the first time two teams had scored a ton or over in the same game.

Uni Rebels v Lightning (Thursday)

Another high scoring game on Thursday night produced a 108-73 win for the league leading Uni Rebels over the Lightning. Spencer Coleman (27.3ppg) led a battery of six players in double figures for the Rebels with Coleman getting a game and season high 38. The Lightning took the lead in the first quarter 27-21 before the Rebels picked up the pace in the second quarter during a 33-20 run that gave them a 54-47 lead at half time. The second half was mostly Rebels as they outscored their opponents 54-26 to win going away. Adding points to the Rebel column were Tim Morris (20), Marcus Ch’ng (16), Jarrod Sheppard (12) and Jake Kirby & Mitch Garton 11 each. Austin Kisselev (31ppg) led the Lightning with 30, Dylan De Santis 18 (6 treys) and Jesse Bell 15.

Ansett v Eagles

Overtime!! Ansett were (like their women’s side) locked up in a ding dong battle with the Eagles for the better part of their game before the Blues made a significant break in overtime to win 116-109. This was the third high scoring game of this round, not seen before in League competition. Five teams hit the ton this round. This one was all locked up at 97 all after Mitch O’Donoghue (6.4ppg) hit a trey with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation and then it came right down to the last two minutes to separate the teams. Jerron Jamerson (37.7ppg) hit a basket and O’Donoghue a trey for a 107-104 lead with 2:26 left to play and the Blues were never headed after that, finishing off the game with 4 free throws with just 25 seconds left. O’Donoghue only hit 9pts for the game (all treys…one to tie the game up in regulation and two to help win it in OT). Jamerson top scored with 46, Robert Skinner (20.2ppg) added 26, and Jai O’Shaughnessy & Brad Davis 14 each. For the Birds Anthony Golden (30.7ppg) hit 38, Joseph Johnson a season high 35 and Jordan Sing 18. This game is a record for most points scored between two teams (225pts) beating the old record of 214 set by Ansett & Razzle Storm in the 2016 Championship Season.

Razzle Storm v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets picked up their first win of the season with a 79-71 victory over the Razzle Storm. Everybody scored for the Jets with Jayden Adams & Joel Stevens leading the way with a combined 44 points, but it was the support of the bench that made the difference. The Storm were up at half time 42-37 thanks to some accurate shooting from Fred Williams (7 treys for the game), but a huge momentum shift to the Jets in the third quarter saw them run in 24 points to just 11 to take a 61-53 lead into the last quarter and the Storm never recovered. Adams (13ppg) hit 24 and Stevens 20 @ 13.3ppg with Alex Weetra adding 9. Williams (27.8ppg) hit a game high 36 with James Rudolph on 11.
