League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Tracy Village Jets went close to setting a new record in the DBA for the biggest margin of a win with a 110-20 thrashing of the Eagles. The 90 point win was 16 points short of the record set back in 1989 when South Darwin dumped Mitsubishi RSL 119-13, a margin of 106. Seven Jets players hit double figures with team scoring leader Sam Rioli potting a game high 23. Next best were Kylie Duggan and Tania Dhu on 14 each. The Jets transition game and a full court press was more than the Eagles could handle. The Birds were in danger of being held scoreless in the first quarter as the Bombers launched a 17-2 strike that left the Eagles gasping to keep up. The win was the 14th in a row for the Bombers and sees the Eagles drop into a fourth place tie on the ladder with Ansett.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels charged into a tie for second place with a 65-31 win over Palmerston. Import Dana Rommel again providing the firepower with a game high 19 points. Delsey Ah Wang added 12. The Rebels broke apart a tight contest with a big 22-7 run in the third quarter with six different players putting points on the board. Palmerston trailed by only 10 at halftime 26-16, but after the half time break it was all Rebels as they threw a full court press at Palmerston causing a number of turnovers leading to points. They outscored them to the tune of 39-15. Tessa Hart was the only Palmerston player to hit double figures with 10.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett turned in the upset of the round with only their second win of the season. The Blues edged past second placed Lightning 54-46 due to big scoring games from Sam Drescher (18), Lauren Flanegan (15) and Chelsea Cook (10). The Blues staged a huge fourth quarter come-back that caught Lightning flat footed, changing the momentum of the game in favour of the Blues who raced away on a 21-5 run for the win. Three straight treys from Flanegan at the beginning of the quarter started the rout for the Blues and set the stage for the win. Starkitsha Higgins led Lightning with 12, followed by Ashleigh Houghton with 10.

Ladder:                                                      Tracy Village Jets 7-0, Lightning & Uni Rebels 5-2, Eagles & Ansett 2-5, & Palmerston 0-7

Next Week Round 8:                     Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 6:15pm, Palmerston v Eagles 7:45pm & Uni Rebels v Lightning 9:15pm

League Men –Eagles v Lightning

Three Eagles hit 20 points each as the Birds flew past Lightning 102-67 to hold onto first place on the ladder. The return of Buster Perkins (20) inspired the Birds as they ground out the win against the feisty Lightning. The Eagles held a 50-31 half time lead and pushed that out to 84-51 after a 34-20 third quarter blitz led by Joseph Johnson (20) and Jarrod Sheppard (20). Playing catch-up never has been one of Lightning’s strength’s and this time it was no different as they failed to rally to the challenge. Keegan Dingo led Lightning with 16 and Tony Halikos chipped in with 10. Louis Ilton lent support to the Eagles with 18 and Matthew Kernick also hit double figures with 10.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Daniel Florance and returnee John King combined for 33 points as the Blues from Ansett slipped past the Uni Rebels 71-65 in a must win game. The Blues were behind 33-27 at half- time… trailed by a point at 46-45 heading into the last quarter and turned a momentum shift into a win with a 26-19 run that keeps them within range of the top four. The addition of King to the line-up for the Blues and the imminent return of guard Matt Hunt will boost the Blues chances of getting back into the final four before the regular season ends. The Rebels had the game in their grasp but failed to hang onto the lead. Import guard Matthew Van Pelt had his best game of the season with a team and game high 25 points (including 4 treys), but it wasn’t enough to hold off that last quarter charge by the Blues. Rebel Jermaine Lattimore added 17 and Matt Fagg hit 14 while Matthew Barrett had 12 and Jake Feeney 10 for the Blues.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets snuck back into second place with an easy 96-67 win against winless Razzle. Despite having no imports on the roster the Jets continue to win, due in large part to the fact that they have all been together as a team for a long time. Phil Collins hit a game and season high 29 points aided by Travis Ellis (17), Jett Sukcharoen (12), Daniel Miller (11) and Michael MacLean (10). Apart from Collins all of the Bombers have been playing as a team for at least five years. The Bombers wasted no time in setting the tempo for the game with a 19-8 first quarter lead and pumped it up another notch in the second quarter with a 34-11 run that put the game out of reach of the Razzle. Billy-Ray Roberts led the green and gold with 15 and he was followed by Robert Oliver with 14.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 6-1, Tracy Village Jets & Palmerston 5-1, Uni Rebels 3-4, Lightning 2-5, Ansett 2-4 & Razzle 0-7

Next Week Round 9:                     Razzle v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Ansett 9:15pm. Bye-Lightning
