Nawalu’s girl at striker

February 23, 2013

Her dad, Radike Nawalu was a former national soccer striker and a deadly, one at that.

Today his daughter Litiana Sogotubu, also plays as striker but on a different turf.

Sogotubu, the Samsung Fiji national women’s hockey striker is currently in India with the national team for the Hero World Hockey League’s second round.

However, she tells SUNSports that being a striker in hockey had nothing to do with her dad being in the same position in the national football team.

“I have been playing hockey for about five to six years now, it’s always been an on and off kind of thing for me,” Sogotubu said.

“I started playing hockey in Cathedral Secondary School.

It was when she came to club level that she was pushed to the frontline to be a striker.

“It had nothing to do with dad, but his advice has always been what I could have done and what I shouldn’t have done.

He has only watched me once and that was last year in the Oceania Pacific Cup but I do take his advice,” Sogotubu said.

She said her teammates have been the ones that help her get through in a game.

She motivates herself by thinking that she needs to do her best and be a leader.

“I always think that if my team mates can do it, then I can too but If I’m tired they must be tired too, so I need to work with them in a team at all times.

“But I still have a long way to go and my personal aim in India is to do my best,” she added.

Sogotubu plays in the frontline with Catherine Thaggard, Maxine Browne and Asinate Blake.

Thaggard and Browne have been around with hockey for quite some time and she said they have always been helpful in her game as well.

“They advise me how I should do things on the field or what I could have done after the game.

“I thank them for that because they have helped my growth in the sports.

“My family, friends and teammates are the ones that carry me all the way,” said the Moala, Lau, native who, has maternal links to Galoa in Serua.
