National men’s hockey captain Hector Smith Junior says leading the team to the World Hockey League in India next month is an honour.

The 28-year-old has been playing the sport since 1999 under the guidance of his father/ namesake Hector Smith Senior who is also the national coach.

“This is one of my proudest moments in hockey,” Smith Jnr said.

“Every time I put on a white jersey I am proud to be a Fijian representing my country.

“I look forward to representing my country.”

He said leading the side to India wouldn’t come easy for him however he was ready to take the responsibility and give it his best shot.

“The challenges that come with it will not be an easy however it is all about motivating the players and working with them to be able to achieve the best.

“I hope to lead by example so that we can achieve the best results.”

Smith also acknowledges the support of his father.

Junior, who plays centre-midfield, says his father is the person who has brought him to where he is today.

Meanwhile, Asco Motors yesterday presented a cheque to the Fiji Hockey Federation as a token of appreciation as two of their employees are members of the national men’s team.

These are captain Smith Junior and vice- captain Rupeni Fabiano.

Asco Motors national marketing manager Elenoa Korovulavula said they were proud to support Fiji Hockey and their contribution is a small gesture to show their support for their two employees who were in the national side.
The team leaves for India on February 14.
