PNG's relay squads preparing for the Commonwealth Games arrived in India from Brisbane on Saturday to take part in the Asian Grand Prix Series that starts tomorrow (June 1) in Pune.
Whilst the main focus for the PNG squad is the relays , our three top athletes have been invited to run in the prestigious individual Grand Prix events. Nelson Stone and Salome dell will take on Asia's best in the 400m whilst Toea Wisil contests the 100m. With $1500 USD prize money for the winner of each of the three races; $800 for second and $500 for third place, competition is certain to be very strong and the PNG trio have a great opportunity to improve their personal best times. Stone has looked very sharp in training and with Wala Gime and Mowen Boino both having shown good form recently the PNGAU is hoping to see some good 4 x 400m relay times. Similarly in the womens event , with Dell , Wisil and Burua all in 54 or 55 second form a very fast time is possible.
From Pune the squad travels to Bangalore for the second event on June 5 and then to Chennai for the final Meet of the series on June 9. The full squad is: Women Salome Dell, Toea Wisil, Mae Koime, Betty Burua, Helen Philemon and Shirley Vunatup
Men Nelson Stone, Kupun Wisil, Joe Matmat, Ruwan Gunasinghe, John Rivan, Wala Gime and Mowen Boino.
