Parks Victoria have advised that the invasive Japanese Kelp is again growing in the Queenscliff Harbour area.

"I am writing to let you know that we have the invasive marine kelp ‘Japanese Kelp’ currently growing in the Queenscliff Harbour area. Although this is not a new establishment, this species dies back during Autumn-Winter and has started to grow back. Japanese Kelp was found to have spread to Pope’s Eye (Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park) in 2016 and we’ve been actively managing the population there in an effort to reduce its impact at this special location. Japanese Kelp grows quite quickly and can outcompete native species. At present we would like to prevent further spread of this species to our Marine National Parks and Sanctuaries and to areas outside of Port Phillip Bay. If you could circulate the attached alert to your members and contacts it would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully we can all work together at reducing the spread of this invasive species".
