Qualification Overview

The Powerboat Program aims to equip boat operators with a good working knowledge of all that is necessary to use a powerboat in a competent and safe manner.

The focus is safety, and how to do things the right way. Discover Sailing Centres offer 3 courses suitable for power boats of all sizes and people of all ages.
The skills learnt are essential for instructors and all club personel included in on water activities.
Why be Qualified?
Those looking to become involved in any new sport or pastime are increasingly looking for qualified instructors to teach them the basic skills in a safe and controlled environment. Teaching to safely and skilfully engage with recreational and club based powerboating is a challenging prospect - those who are qualified have undergone an important training process to ensure that they have skills necessary to manage safety and provide effective instruction. The Yachting Australia Start Powerboating course is accepted by NSW Roads and Maritime as a NSW Boat Licencing Course, centres and clubs are beginning to utilise this as a way of generating revenue. As a result the demand for skilled Powerboat Instructors is growing. There are 2 main benefits – the qualification itself, of which the advantages are summarised below, and the personal development as part of the training required to be a dinghy instructor. The elements of First Aid, Powerboat Handling, and the instructor course itself, will give you a skill set to perform to your best ability as an instructor. Qualified Powerboat instructors are more confident and proficient, not because of the qualification itself, but the training they have done to achieve it
