Softball umpiring can provide you with some great personal rewards and lifelong friendships.
As an umpire you must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the rules, quick decision-making, an ability to explain and defend decisions and a willingness to keep the game moving at a steady pace. You are in a position to be a positive role model around children and young adults.
The Softball umpiring program is great fun and offers both males and females the opportunity to improve their fitness and knowledge of the rules as well as work with some of the most enthusiastic people in Softball.
Most Softball umpires start at the domestic level, from umpiring juniors right through to senior competitions. All you need to become an umpire is an interest in sport and a willingness to be involved.
As umpires gain skills and confidence, they often seek optional ongoing accreditation, which can lead to umpiring state, national and international games.
An umpire is also someone who can be put in a position of authority and handle the responsibility without being overbearing. As an umpire, you're in charge, but it's the players who the fans have come to watch, not you.
More than 2,300 accredited Softball umpires throughout Australia spend their summer ruling the diamond at local Clubs and Associations. They dedicate their time to umpiring as the benefits include helping improve fitness and knowledge, enhancing leadership and management skills in high-pressure situations and also having fun.
Softball Australia has developed an extensive range of educational umpiring resources for beginner, intermediate and advanced umpires.
Australia has some of the best umpires in the world and for those that progress to our Australian Championships or represent Australia at a World Championship, it is a much deserved honour.
Further assistance and support can be provided through the State Umpiring Directors and National umpiring committee listed in the umpiring directory.
