For parents

If you have decided that Softball is the game for your child, you would like to watch a game or try out for a team yourself, the best place to start is your local Club or Association. You can Find a Club near you or contact your State Association or Softball Australia for more information.

Before you or your child starts playing Softball, there are a few things you might like do:

  • Read about the basic skills of the game including throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and moving between bases. Information about these basic skills, as well as tips and training programs to help you develop your skills, are available in the Coaching section of this website.
  • Access appropriate equipment and clothing. Note that most Clubs or schools supply players with Softball equipment and all that your child will require for initial participation is comfortable clothing and flat soled shoes.
  • Gain an understanding of the basic Softball rules and terminology
  • Read about some of the Softball programs and activities offered for your child including Softball Batter Upand the Active After School Community program (AASCP)
  • Think about volunteering your time or skills
  • You might want to build a team of friends, family members or work colleagues to play in an OzPitch orMasters competition
  • It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with health and wellbeing issues and playing policies and guidelines so that everyone's Softball experience is a safe and positive one.

Check out the playing section of the website for more information.

Parents Code of Behaviour

The support and influence of parents and caregivers is vitally important to ensure children enjoy their Softball experience and is crucial to the success of any Softball Batter Up program. The primary motivating factors for children participating in sport are having fun and being with friends.

By educating Softball clubs to be aware of their responsibilities Softball Australia and Member States aim to ensure that children receive quality Softball experiences when they play Softball at school or when they join a Club.

These responsibilities mean that schools and Clubs must provide an environment where children are safe and are able to enjoy their Softball whilst receiving positive encouragement and support from coaches, teachers, parents and volunteers. Softball is an inclusive sport and provides the benefits of friendship that team sport offers.

Softball Australia has a Member Protection Policy that includes a Code of Conduct for a parent or guardian of any person involved with an activity run by Softball Australia, a Member State or an affiliated association or club.

All parents must meet the following requirements in regard to their conduct during that activity:

  • Remember that your child participates in sport for their own enjoyment, not yours.
  • Focus on your child's efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.
  • Never ridicule or yell at your child and other children for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  • Show appreciation for good performance and skilful plays by all players, including opposing players.
  • Respect the decisions of officials and coaches and teach young people to do the same.
  • Do not physically or verbally abuse anyone associated with the sport (player, coach, umpire etc).
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Refrain from engaging in any behaviour that is in breach of Softball Australia's Member Protection Policy.
