Hume League Draw

TRADITIONAL heavyweights Jindera and Howlong will open next year’s Hume league season with a stand-alone clash on Good Friday.

The two clubs clashed on Good Friday in a historic first for the league last season which attracted a bumper crowd of more than 2500 at Howlong.

Jindera will host the March 29 match with the remaining clubs to play their openers the following week on April 6.

The Bulldogs are toying with the idea of the reserves playing at noon, followed by the fourths with the seniors to start at 3pm with the thirds to be the last to play, possibly under lights.

This year’s Good Friday match was a resounding success with more than $10,000 donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Jindera president Jerim Hayes praised league officials for once again granting Jindera’s wish to play on Good Friday.

“By all accounts the league was hesitant to allow the match to happen this year,” Hayes said.

“But a crowd of 2500 people at Howlong proved it was the right decision and a terrific opportunity for us to showcase and promote the league.

“I commend the league for approving the initiative and hopefully it is another huge success and can become a permanent fixture between the two clubs.”

The league has retained the seeded draw which sees this year’s top-six sides play each other twice with the bottom sides also meeting twice.

League president Merv Wegener said that some clubs opposed the seeded draw but the league felt it remained the fairest system in a 13-side competition.

This year’s grand finalists Osborne and Henty will clash in round 4.

Each club receives two byes throughout the season with the interleague clash against the Tallangatta league to be played on May 25.
