Powell to coach the Crows

HUME league club Billabong Crows have appointed Narrandera and Osborne premiership player Brett Powell as playing coach for next season.

He replaces Ben Kerr, who spent the past two years at the helm.

Powell, 31, achieved a lifelong ambition this season when he played in his home club Narrandera’s 26-year drought-breaking flag against Collingullie-Ashmont-Kapooka.

“The opportunity to coach presented itself and I didn’t hesitate to grab it with both hands and I’m looking forward to giving it a red-hot crack,” Powell said.

“By all reports it is a terrific club and the committee is very passionate about building some sustained success.

“Winning an elusive flag with my home club this season was bit of a dream come true for me.

“Having achieved that, I see coaching as the next challenge.”

Powell has played over 200 games with Narrandera as well as playing for Osborne from 2006-08.

He played in three consecutive grand finals with the Cats and tasted the ultimate success in his first season with the perennial powerhouse.

The versatile big man served as an assistant coach under Graham Hart in 2008.

The Crows are confident of retaining the majority of their list with Kerr set to remain at the club.

Midfielder Will Holman will return after missing this year after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

The Crows are also close to landing several high-profile recruits.

“They have got a developing list with a lot of young kids in that 18 to 21-year-old bracket,” Powell said.

“If we can land a couple of recruits and with natural improvement from the kids the club can improve significantly.”

Club president Ted Brooks is confident Powell will continue the good work of Kerr over the past two seasons.

“We were keen to get a coach who has previous experience in the Hume league and knows the standard required to be successful,” Brooks said.

“Someone that knows the training and recruiting required and there is no doubting Brett’s leadership qualities.”

The appointment of Powell almost completes the Hume league coaching puzzle with Lockhart the only club yet to finalise its senior coach.
