Racing on Saturday 9th January 2106
Association and SoPYC Race 4 – 13:25 mid-river start.
Swan River Championships - Saturday 16th and Saturday 23rd January
A reminder that the presentations at SoPYC at approximately 12:30 on Saturday 23rd January are an important part of our Association’s event. All skippers and crews are strongly
urged to be there (even if only for a short time) to support the winners, our Association and our fleet.
Sweet Babs Lives Again
Congratulations go to David Beresford on his recent purchase of Sweet Babs. David and his crew have been actively preparing Babs over the Christmas break and are ready to campaign as newcomers to the RPYC S80 fleet.
It is great that this past championship winner will be seen out around the buoys once again and good luck and fair winds to David and his crew.
Related to David’s move is the news that Micron (berthed at MBSC) could soon be on the market. Anyone interested in this opportunity should speak to David.
S80s Performed Well at Cockburn Sound Regatta
Well Done Karen Koedyk and Her Crew on Frakka for being the sole Association representative at this year’s CSR. Division 2 was closely fought with the top 5 boats finishing within 3 points of each other. Frakka finished in 2nd place overall.
Brio (Keith Thompson CYC) finished 5th just 3 points back after 5 races.

Visiting Teams S80 State Championships – 5th to 7th March 2016
I am pleased to now confirm that we will be joined this year by a visiting crew from Dubai (previously reported in the news item of 13/12/15 here). Mark Broad and his crew campaign ‘Kadaitcha’, (refer photos) the only S80 in the Middle East, from the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, and have been successful in IRC events and other regattas throughout the year. Mark says “Chatting with my mates, we have often thought how we would match up against a ‘proper fleet’ of S80’s as sailed in Perth!” The visitors will sail Grand Piano, being very kindly loaned by David Yu.
As part of the preparations the committee are asking for volunteers to help get Grand Piano in readiness and delivered to Freo in time for Mark and his team to practice prior to the event. Please contact me (or any other committee member).
Unfortunately, it would seem that earlier plans for a visiting Victorian team to campaign the States are now unlikely to materialise (per previous news item of 14/10/15) .
Further to discussions with our fellow S80 friends in Melbourne, we are about to embark on a joint project to produce a video to promote the S80 Class nationally. The end product will involve a short 15 minute video which includes action.
Shots and short interviews with S80 Sailors on both sides of this wide brown land. The purpose of this being to post on the respective web sites, Facebook pages and to promote anywhere there may be people interested in sailing.
Over the next few weeks we shall be finalising the filming plan, engaging a film crew and start recording. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to make some time available to sit before a camera and tell the world your S80 sailing story.
S80 Yacht Association Prize Night Saturday 18th June 2016 at SoPYC
It seems a fair way off at present, but the date has been set and planning is underway for 2016 Prize Night. Please put this date in your diary now and talk to your crews about being part of this great show.
Parking Management – Matilda Bay Reserve.
For the information of RPYC sailors the club has advised that the Conservation and Land Management Act (CALM act) Amendment Bill has passed through Parliament and is now in operation.
Amendments to the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984 give Parks and Wildlife staff the authority to issue infringements to vehicles parked unlawfully or not displaying a valid parking ticket on the Matilda Bay Reserve.
Assurance has been provided that parking on Australia II Drive and the car park opposite the Club will be closely monitored.
