Barry Coates honoured at Nationals
At the recent Nationals, the AHCA took the opportunity to pay truibute to Queenslander Barry Coates.
Barry has been a great ambassador for the Class Association over many years and, whilst no longer sailing, was in attendance at the Gold Coast Nationals and the regatta dinner.
AHCA President Russell Phillips took the opportunity to thank Barry for the sportsmanship he has shown throughout many seasons and in many countries and to promote the inclusive nature of our sport. Barry was presented with one of the early medallions used as prizes in events, along with an AHCA hat and badge. It was also announced that, from 2016, the national Liberty trophy will be renamed the Barry Coates award.
Russell recalled their many battles on the water, including a memorable regatta at a state championships in Victoria. Whilst both were leading the fleet by a considerable margin, they had a combined 'seniors moment' and neither could remember how many laps of the course they had done. So, they decided to do another lap - just in case. It turned out that the additional lap was not required, and their combined laughter at their error could be heard all the way around the course.
Barry has donated his Liberty to the Gold Coast Sailing Club, where it has, appropriately been renamed Bazza.
