MAR20313 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)

Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal is the commercial ticket to operate a commercial passenger vessel less that 12m in length in near coastal waters up to 15nm from shore, in the Murray river or within 3nm of a mother ship in the EEZ. 

Propulsion power is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine

Licensing/Regulatory Information

This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

NB: Sea Safety units are required for all students during orientation week

  • Provide First Aid
  • Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
  • Survive at sea using survival craft
  • Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
  • Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
  • Operate inboard and outboard motors
  • Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
  • Meet work health and safety requirements
  • Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres
  • Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
  • Follow environmental work practices
  • Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
  • Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
  • qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book OR extended qualifying sea service including 50% outside of 15 nautical miles from shore,
  • a VHF marine radio operator certificate of proficiency 
  • Final assessment by ACA with notification to AMSA for issurance of the ticket.
