FLYING 11 WINNERS at 2012 NB SailSports - Bethwaite Regatta

Mark Long, Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, Sunday, 11 November 2012

The annual Bethwaite Regatta was hosted by Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, Lake Macquarie on November 10th & 11th.

The event was proudly sponsored by NB SailSports, the new distributor of 9er products in Australia.

The Flying 11 fleet had 18 starters, being the largest class sailing over the weekend.  Even amongst the 22 sailors racing 29ers on the weekend, no fewer than 18 had previously raced in the Flying 11 Class.  These simple numbers serve to demonstrate the merit of F11s to deliver strong continuing participation on the youth development pathway!

Crew Demi Gilbert, teaming for the first time with her cousin Finn Gilbert.

Demi normally skippers her own F11 from Manly16ft SC, whilst Finn races from Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Club.

Saturday 10th - sailing was blessed with a consistent 12-14 knot SSE wind.  The Race Committee staged a long afternoon, to successfully complete 4 races.   After two wins, 1265 - 'Tom' held a narrow 1 point lead over 1375 - Outlaw, and 1396 - 'Slick' stood clearly in third position.

Sunday 11th  - saw the lighter 8-12 knot ESE breeze vary repeatedly in direction & strength.  1265 - 'Tom' maintained her consistency and recorded another two victories.  1396 - 'Slick' sailed a flawless race in heat #6, to sweeten her scorecard just enough to take the overall 2nd position from Belmont team-mate 1375 - 'Outlaw'.
