2018 Gill Flying 11 National Championships
Manly 16' Skiff Club
Dates: 13th - 19th January 2018
Yachting NSW once again conducted their annual Youth State Championships over the October long weekend. In rotation, it was the turn of Lake Macquarie serve as the venue, and Belmont 16ft Sailing Club were the hosts.
Some two hundred entries from all states except WA, recognised the event as the first major youth regatta of the new season, and mounted strong teams for the three day / ten race competition.
Once again the Flying 11 Class held the largest number of entries in the double-handed classes represented, and the list of 42 boats certainly was the biggest F11 Class participation ever in this event.
Day 1 proved challenging for the Race Officials, with building WNW wind of between 20 - 25 knots. There were times early in the day when the wind abated enough to start races, but within minutes the gague would record above limit strength, and force further postponements. Eventually, all classes managed to record 2 heats. The F11s revelled in the strong winds, and showed their liking for planing conditions. 1396 "Slick" sailed by Belmont's Owen Long & Thomas Steenson showed consistency with two 2nd places. There were two broken masts, one of which delayed the start of a successful regatta for Avalon's Sarah Parker sailing "Wave Runner".
Day 2 served up another dilemma of the opposite mode, no fair winds for almost three hours. Persistence was rewarded, and Officials completed four heats in a building 8 - 12 knot easterly breeze. With conditions more to their liking, 1265 "Tom" sailed by Finn Gilbert & Tom Smith, posted two wins and two 'top five' scores and made it known that they were a serius contender. 1396 - "Slick" held onto their overnight leaders position by securing yet another second along with their first victory of the regatta.
Day 3 was raced over the longest course of the weekend, and in a shifty ESE breeze of 8 - 12 knots. With only one race to be dropped after up to nine heats, and the second drop only playing a part when ten races were completed, the final podium places were only decided at the last mark of the tenth race of the day. 1265 - "Tom" began with a challenged 8th placing, but then reeled off three consecutive wins, to stake their claim to the title. 1396 - "Slick" started the day with another two 2nd placings, to hold the leaders position. After a collision on the first beat of the last race, Slick was buried and had to fight hard to claw their way back towards the charging race leader "Tom". Half way down the last downwind "Slick" had the necessary fifth palcing, but around the last mark and dash to the finish they slipped to sixth, which resulted in an even scorecard for both Tom & Slick. The tie was resolved in favour of Finn Gilbert & Tom Smith, owing to their greater number of 1st placings.
