A one second win in Race 10 to 1258 Flying Colours, sallied by Michael Meyer and Isobel Cameron, proved the difference by beating 1280 Gate Crasher, sailed by Briony Van Galen and Hamish Denholm, by one point.

A one second win in Race 10 to 1258 Flying Colours, sallied by Michael Meyer and Isobel Cameron, proved the difference by beating 1280 Gate Crasher, sailed by Briony Van Galen and Hamish Denholm, by one point.

Light winds confronted sailors again on day 1.  Unfortunately only 4 boats started but the competition was just as fierce.  1258 Flying Colours won the first race with 1055 Fair Weather Johnson and 1082 Pink Panther making up the placings.  After a good lunch, 1280 Gate Crasher hit their straps and won both races in the afternoon.  At the end of day 1 we had 9 races in the series which meant after two drops we had 1280 Gate Crasher and 1258 Flying Colours neck and neck on 13 points a peace.

Sunday started the same way as yesterday with winds around 5 knots.  1258 Flying Colours got a good start and lead at the top mark and maintained the advantage around the bottom mark.  1280 Gate Crasher went to the opposite side to 1258 which paid dividends at the top marks being 2 boat lengths in front.  The crowd was cheering in the clubhouse as both 1280 and 1258 converged on the finishing line.  1258 Flying Colours won by a photo finish, six inches, one whole second!

The keen rivalry continued into Race 11.  Good starts by 1055 Fair Weather Johnson and 1280 Gate Crasher ensured a nerve racking race.  Briony’s finger nails were already short and Michael’s dramatic move to stay still in his boat proved very taxing and stressful.  1280 Gatecrasher was 20 lengths in front around the top mark.  1258 Flying Colours made up ground by the bottom mark.  The decision not to cover cost 1280 Gate Crasher’s advantage which was lost to 1258 Flying Colours in the finish.  1055 Fair Weather Johnson was a close third which in the light winds showed the skills of Peter Cameron.

The last race started at 3-00, the cutoff time for the last race to start for the day.  The P.R.O. called it beautifully to start the race after all, as the sea breeze finally came in.  1280 Gate Crasher lead all the way to their fifth 1 placing for the championship.

Michael Meyer and Isobel Cameron were in front at the end by one solitary point to land their first state title.  1055 Fair Weather Johnson came back from nowhere to pip 1280 Gate Crasher at the post for handicap honors.

Thanks must go to the team at Midway Point Yacht Club who were great hosts and organized another well run regatta. All that missing was more wind.  Better luck next year.
