"I have again come to realise that there is nothing anywhere in the world as suitable for 10 to 18 year olds as the F11's. "

"Fantastic boats in a breeze, incomparable on reaches, physically testing at times, tolerant of a wide range of weights, light skippers can match up with heavier crews, heavier and rapidly growing skippers can remain competitive by using smaller younger crews, thereby introducing the younger ones to the class. "

"Sensible class rules allow minor developments and the opportunity for some individualisation - important if our young sailors are to fully develop knowledge and skills. M
ore than competitive with any other boat of similar size in any conditions, and despite its relatively long history, still "state of the art"?"

"This boat has some history but has also stood the test of time....  If you were going to redesign it for the next 20 years there is little that you would want to change."

Flying 11 Training Camp 8/9/10th October - Pittwater

We are currently planning to have another training camp in Pittwater (see picture header) over 3 days, as per last year's Basin Camp, during the school holidays between 3rd and 4th terms. Avalon Sailing Club [ASC] has again offered to be the host club for the camp, which this time will be run during the last week of the school holidays, not over the weekend.

If you haven't come to one of these yet, this is your big chance. We have designed this camp around working with many of our newer crews to F11s, raising their skill levels to become more confident in sailing regattas amongst the general fleet, including such areas as boat setup, fundamental sailing techniques specific to the F11 class, starting practice and strategies in F11 fleet racing. More confidence = more smiles and more fun!

Andrew Chapman, one of our past F11 National Champions will be the Head Coach. He will be ably supported by some of our top F11 crew and the ASC support team.

Camping at the Basin Camping Grounds will be optional as was the case last year, where everyone had a ball with camp fires, tenting sing-alongs, BBQs and close to nature experiences ( we won't play on the hail storm as we arrived). Unfortunately, our association personnel will not be available to supervise the camping activities as happened last year - we are just not built for it!

All camping will be at your own means and responsibilities - parent/s, meals and accommodation etc. It is easy to get there by ferry from Palm Beach, and we will publicise all necessary information to those that wish to take up the opportunity of bonding and a most memorable stay in one of the greatest sites in Australia. It is absolutely beautiful. All crews had a fantastic time last year, so did the parents. We can assist with boat cradle transport to the campgrounds if needed. Bookings with the National Parks and Wildlife at the site are required.

Email me at  pricey@aapt.net.au to indicate your interest.

Please understand that we need to know of numbers to make this camp happen very soon. Many have enquired over the past year, so here is your chance to let us know for sure. We will forward all the necessary information to you in return.

[ F11 Club Delegates - please chase this up with your crews asap as we need to have an idea of numbers by next week]

Big September Saturday 27th is looming up fast. Hunters Hill are once again hosting the ice breaker NSW F11 Sprint Championships, this year happening on Saturday only so you can do your club thing on Sunday and not miss out on the early local programmes there.

This year the sprints will also include invited other classes in separate divisions, such as Sabots, Manly Juniors, Cherubs, 29ers and 13s which will make for some very exciting sailing off Cockatoo Island.

All details and race documents are easily found by clicking on the link in the left column or via our website calendar.  Discount of $10 on your entry fee is applicable if you get it in by 12th September, which you can now do on line - whoo hoo!

Where else can you find out all the goss on who's doing what, with whom, and when after the winter break - everyone will be there!

NSW Youth Regatta 4/5/6th October - Gosford SC

Early Birds - Jump on to the YNSW link to enter for the 2008 Youth Regatta at Gosford SC early October long weekend just prior  to the "proposed" Basin/Pittwater Training Camp. Early Birds in by this Friday 5th September pay $100 for two handers instead of $150.
The F11 Association is very keen to promote our participation at this regatta where a big presence of F11s will be an awesome show for the "poor old other" fleets bobbing about trying to get to the finish line. Show them what a real boat on steroids looks like as you fly passed.

Oh, by the way, the yardstick for F11s is pretty good, meaning if you are on song, you stand a great chance of looking famous as our state's 2008 Youth Champion, which might be worth millions in years to come, maybe!

 Pre-Nationals Training Camp 20/21/22nd December

Keep an eye on our web and newsletters for information on a F11 Training Camp over 3 days just prior to Christmas.

This camp is designed to hone up all your skills in readiness for the Nationals in January at Twofold Bay, Eden. We have yet to determine the venue for this camp, but it would be desirable to have it on open water to simulate the conditions we will experience at the nationals.

The camp will be catering to all skill levels and it is one camp that you will not want to miss if you are interested in getting the best out your nationals experience at Eden.

Stay tuned for further information soon in our next newsletter.

 NSW Child Protection Documents

All levels within associations and club activities have legal responsibilities for child protection under NSW legislation. This includes our national and state associations, clubs, coaches and officials.

This involves complying with the Working with Children Check, which is a legal requirement and includes:

■ Requiring all employees (including volunteers) who will be working in identified child related positions to declare whether or not they are a Prohibited Person (eg. a person prohibited from working with children due to convictions for certain serious offences). It is an offence for a prohibited person to apply for or remain in child related employment.

If you are in any way involved with working with children, you must complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration form and submit this to your club, state or national body which shall retain this document for a period of 2 years.

We have place a link to the NSW Government's Dept. of Sport & Rec website on our own website under the menu ORGANISATION. You will find all relevant documentation here in relation to compliance with the current legislation regarding child protection etc.

All volunteers and officials working with children should complete the

"Attachment #4 - Prohibited Employment Declaration".
All clubs should register with the Dept of Sport & Rec via the

"Attachment #1 - Employer Registration" form.

  F11 Assistant/Junior/Club coaches' programme

We are really excited to announce the introduction of a pathway series of YNSW Accredited Coaches' Programmes specifically designed to nurture young F11 coaches within our club fleet sailors.

Our new coaches will be utilised to help with training of our F11 fleets and in turn get the opportunity to earn some money from their favourite sport.  The accreditation will not be exclusive to coaching only F11s but other classes as well.

Your accreditation comes with all insurance coverage required to protect both you and your charges, and you will be taught to create, conduct and coordinate entire training programmes for your club and the universe. It is a most rewarding proposition for you all to be involved with. As we know, "all great sailors in Australia have come through the Flying Elevens".

On offer for our more experienced sailors is the chance to become an accredited :

  1. Assistant Coach - age 13yrs+
  2. Junior Coach - age 16yrs+
  3. Club Coach - 18yrs+

The newly accredited pool of coaches will create an ongoing resource for our F11 clubs and associations to raise the confidence and skill levels of our F11 fleets around the country.

There is an opportunity right now - yes this is happening NOW September '08 - to become accredited by the end of the Basin/Pittwater Training Camp 8/9/10th October. Requirements: 1-2 day classroom tuition (not necessarily consecutive) the on water training (see Basin/P'water Camp), then you are on your way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Club Delegates (you can as an individual too) - NOW - register your club F11 sailors interest with us by emailing me pricey@aapt.net.au so we can make arrangements for your club to have trained, accredited Assistant, Junior and Club Level Coaches delivered to your door so to speak by the end of the month. Classroom sessions proposed from Sat 20th September.

What a GREAT IDEA - what a RESOURSE for your club! Our "Rookie King" Andrew Kendall NSW F11 Vice President is now "in the tent" of Yachting NSW, and is the primary driver of this wonderful initiative. Get involved early - who knows where it will end! Send me your applicants and we will do the rest.

F11 Coaching FoC for all at the States and Nationals

Great news for those Clubs that do not have a regular coach to help out at the States and Nationals this season. Your F11 Association will provide FoC (Free of Charge)  F11 coaching staff available to all at the upcoming Titles/Regattas. No need to keep dipping into your pockets, it's covered.

They will be familiar to you from preceding training sessions and will ensure that everyone gets a fair deal, support, advice and tuition during the regattas. We realise some of the clubs already provide their own coaches, but we don't want anyone to miss out. We'll look after you.

It's all part of the service from the keen supporters in your F11 association committees. We are such NICE GUYS, aren't we?

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
