1824(TM) NSW Flying Eleven State Championships 2008-2009 Round 1

The NSW Flying Eleven fleet of 76 boats from 11 clubs met up for the first round of the 1824(TM) NSW Flying Eleven State Championships 2008-2009 on the weekend of 6th and 7th December at Gosford Sailing Club, with round 2 set for February 14th and 15th at Belmont 16'SC.

The mammoth role up included 19 All Girl crews and 23 Junior crews under 15 years of age. The class has also really blossomed this year with 15 new boats being added to the fleet of 117 registered boats in NSW in the 2008/2009 season. With a quick look at the results [www.flying11.yachting.org.au] from the three races sailed, each in quite varied conditions, many clubs were represented in the top ten groups with three individual winners for each race. Close to half the fleet was made up of young girls, many of them new skippers this year, giving the boys a run for their money.

Manly 16'SSC claimed first blood in race 1 with 1366 Protagonist Declan Reilly and James Lawira-Fernandez edging out team mates 1363 Crunchie M16'SSC and 1368 Cotton On from Avalon SC over in second and third place respectively.

Race 2 produced an historic first 1st place for Cronulla SC's Angela Bates and Simon Boardman sailing 1364 A Little Psycho, ahead of 1340 Xlr8 from Belmont 16'SC second and 1362 Boris M16'SSC over in third position.

The final race 3 was held in arguably the most settled breeze of the weekend with 1363 Crunchie M16'SSC winning a spectacular tacking duel from 1362 Boris M16'SSC ahead of brother and sister crew 1361 Do Geese See God Robert and Kasha Wojcik M16'SSC.

Series leaders after round 1 are all girl crew 1363 Crunchie Olivia Price and Maddie Clancy M16'SSC just ahead of last year's state champions 1368 Cotton On Scott Cotton and Max Vos ASC and 2008 national champion 1362 Boris Alex McFadyen and his new crew Bradley Leicester M16'SSC currently third.

Round 1 top 10 places: 1. 1363 Crunchie M16"SSC, 2. 1368 Cotton On ASC, 3. 1362 Boris M16'SSC, 4. 1361 Do Geese See God M16'SSC, 5. 1366 Protagonist M16'SSC, 6. 1353 Flying Hellfish M16'SSC, 7. 1369 Tom Tom ASC, 8. 1306 Fatty & Skinny B16'SC, 9. 1340 Xlr8 B16'SC, 10. 1337 Shake Your Booties II HHSC
