Thanks to all our fellow Flying 11 sailors who joined us on Saturday down at Lane Cove 12'Skiff Club for the 2007 McGrath Estate Agents Upper Harbour Championship.

Thanks to all our fellow Flying 11 sailors who joined us on Saturday down at Lane Cove 12'Skiff Club for the 2007 McGrath Estate Agents Upper Harbour Championship. The afternoon kicked off with all competitors behind the line for a black flag start off Longueville Wharf in the "Dash for Cash".  In a very light south easterly breeze random puffs on the water tested the skills and patience of all crews as some worked while others set spinnakers in an effort to be first out of the Lane Cove River to the main upper-harbour area and claim the cash prize. Brothers Robert and Mathew Crawford in Heroes and Villians led the fleet to claim victory for the second year in a row followed closely by Manly 16' Skiff Club sailors Josh McKnight and James Lawira-Fernandez.  Third across the line was Alison Chapman and Alex Paton in Bambino from LC12'SSC.  Macca Paton in "Too Blonde" jumped, or fell out the back of his boat to try and let his crew Jack Rickard sail one-up however this was not a winning tactic with rescue boats then circling to ensure the crews safety.

The 2007 McGrath Estate Agents Upper Harbour Championship started off Valencia Street Wharf at 2:15pm.  Belmont 16'SSC twins Nicholas and Andrew Duggan in Upbeat won the start but it was not long before locals Alison Chapman and Alex Paton in Bambino were in front of the feet showing the way.  Conditions were tricky with only 6 to 8 knots of breeze from the south east and an incoming tide.  Bambino led for the first two legs but Scott Cotton and Max Vos from Avalon SC showed some superior boat speed and worked the shifts in the wind direction to overtake Bambino by the third mark  Manly's Josh McKnight and James Lawira-Fernandez  comfortably held third place through out the race followed by Tim and Nicola Forbes-Smith in Sparta.

The breeze dropped during the race enabling the leaders to extend while the middle of the fleet bunched up and positions changed.   Lane Cove boat Ritual (Sandy McWilliam and Oliver Hartas) lost out as the breeze softened during the afternoon and dropped from 5th at the first mark to 10th by the end of the race.   Heroes and Villians (Robert and Matthew Crawford), River Dance (Kate Brown and Grace Armstrong) and Upfront (Ben Dixon and Cam Gundy) all worked their way up the fleet during the race after being well back at the first mark.

Fresh from Manly Juniors and sailing their first season in the Flying 11 Zac Duryea and Hugo Vos were crossing tacks early on with the leaders but suffered when they sailed into a large patch of no wind and stopped while the fleet sailed around them.

Bambino once overtaken did not give up.   Cotton and Vos in "It's Crunch Time" worked hard and finished just 10 seconds ahead of Bambino.  Anna Kendall and Monica Hyde from Avalon SC sailed consistently through out the afternoon to finish 5th overall and take out 1st on handicap for the event.

Thanks to Brent Courtney and McGrath Estate Agents for their continued support of the F11 class and the Upper Harbour Championship.  Thanks also to LC12'SSC, the race committee, volunteers, spectators, parents and Flying 11 sailors for making the afternoon a success.  Look forward to seeing you next year.  Hopefully the wind will be back then too!
