Local girls Ali Champman and Alex Paton in 1345 BAMBINO from LC12'SSC led the fleet low and out of the tide to the first mark off Goat Island..........
Saturday 3rd November 2007 - The McGrath Flying Eleven Upper Harbour Championships was again hosted by LC12'SSC with a light SE breeze testing the fleet's knowledge of river sailing skills to the utmost. Many early leaders were subdued with "at the moment pressure and tide" conditions only to be left with big holes to get through were others chose a meandering pathway up to the first mark to take the lead.
Local girls Ali Champman and Alex Paton in 1345 BAMBINO from LC12'SSC led the fleet low and out of the tide to the first mark off Goat Island, with Scott Cotton and Max Vos from ASC in 1350 IT'S CRUNCH TIME gaining a handful of places and closing the gap for second after winning the lottery up the center off Longnose Pt, with Manly boat 1353 FLYING HELLFISH Josh McKnight and James Lawira-Fernandez chasing in 3rd boat around.
Fickle shifts and some bullets helped change the fleet around and IT'S CRUNCH TIME assumed the lead by the next work to the top mark from BAMBINO, with some mixed positions following on mid fleet.
With the breeze dying off, BAMBINO pushed hard but could not overcome the cover IT'S CRUNCH TIME were offering and after a fairly long race, Cotton and Vos assumed the Upper Harbour Champion's title for 2007.
Preceding the Championship was the fun event - The Dash For Cash - which started off the LC12'SSC at 1:30pm and was a start-out sprint to the starting line for the UHCs. Returning to the fleet on this occasion was the brothers Crawford from RPAYC in 1318 HEROES & VILLANS who managed to fend off a number of competitors to make it over the line first. There were some fancy moves at the corner in very little breeze which brought all the fleet together, made some crews look famous and others went from rooster to feather duster.
All in all, it was another fun and competitive day conducted by Lane Cove, with all crews now loading up for the first round of the NSW State Titles at Belmont on the 1st & 2nd December.
