Tasmanian Flying 11 State Championships

Round 2

Cameron and Sarah Gibson in Riders on the Storm (1253) are the Tasmanian Flying 11 State Champions for 2006-2007. After trailing by one point after the 6-race first round at Midway Point, the Gibsons managed to turn the tables on David Cromarty and Lauren Griffiths in Beyond the Edge (1307) in Round 2, hosted by Tamar Yacht Club at Beauty Point on 17th& 18th March.

Both crews were equal on points after 11 races over 4 days and the championship was finally decided in the last moments of the last race with Riders taking a 12 second win.

After the big blow in Round 1, crews were faced with 12-15 knot breezes on the Saturday and very challenging light, shifty breezes on the final day.

Jeremy Coles and Mike Titchen in Vengeance (1258) were the big improvers from Round 1, with 3 wins and 3 thirds. They sailed extremely well and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with next year, and in the Tasmanian Schools Yardstick Regatta in mid April. Overall 3rd in the series in their first year was a very fine result.

Beyond the Edge won two races in the round but unfortunately were not consistent enough to hold out Riders, who finished the round with a win and 5 second places.

Beyond the Edge took out Handicap honours for the series, with Hard Drive (1252) sailed by Clare Cromarty and Ben Flood in second place.  A highlight for Clare came in the second last race, by sailing past big brother under spinnaker and then holding him off on the work to the finish!

Briony van Galen and Mem Worledge in Die Hard (1082) also improved enormously over the course of the regatta, winning the final two races on handicap.

Sinclair Berry and Piers Murdoch in the newly acquired Bumblebee (1185) also acquitted themselves well in their third time out in the boat. They have benefited enormously from the experience and are expected to be regulars for the remainder of the TYC club races this season.

Other than the final club races, one more outing remains for the Flying 11's this season- the Tasmanian Schools Yardstick Regatta to be held at Leven Yacht Club at Ulverstone. This is one of the few occasions that Flying 11's get to sail in Bass Strait (although only just!), and up to six Flying 11's are expected to be sailing in the mixed fleet.
