Report - Flying Elevens 2006/2007 NSW State Championships - Round 2

A 63 boat fleet representing 12 clubs contested the 2006-2007 NSW Flying 11 State Championship. The final three heats were sailed on Pittwater over the weekend 10 and 11 February. Racing was organised by RPAYC with Peter Moore as Race Officer.

Racing started on Saturday after delays waiting for the SE wind to establish and stabilise providing a shifty 5-7 knot breeze for race 1. The lead changed throughout the race until 1331 Bring It On Again (Nick Brunning/Mathew Stokes) claimed the lead for the final triangle and held on to win from 1344 Panther (Justin Sharrock/Kris Fay) and 1340 Cats & Dogs (Simon Leicester/Matthew Graham).

Prior to race 2 the breeze had shifted and was a slightly more consistent 7 to 9 knots from the E but then eased part way through the race shifting to the NE. Panther was at the front at the first mark and led the boats to the finish closely followed by 1318 Heroes & Villains (Robert Crawford/Matthew Crawford) and 1303 Joker (Jonathon Roel/Robert Wojcik).

Sunday's weather had reduced cloud cover and provided a 10 to 12 knot NE for the start. Crew were impressed with the promise of better breeze and hoops and hollers could be heard. In a similar effect to that experienced the previous day cloud formations influenced wind strength and direction. The 2nd reach from the top mark was affected by changing wind strength and direction causing many boats to drop spinnakers before rounding the wing mark and hoisting again. Panther again led the way but, as an example of how competitive these boats are, the lead changed briefly to Cats & Dogs before Panther crossed to win the race by a good margin.

Overall results: 1344 Panther (Justin Sharrock/Kris Fay) 1st, 1318 Heros + Villains (Robert Crawford/Matthew Crawford) 2nd, 1340 Cats & Dogs (Simon Leicester/Matthew Graham).

Handicap results: 1293 Relentless (Claire Lunsman/Melinda Smith) 1st,  1346 Riverdance (Kate Brown/ Grace Armstrong) 2nd,  1305 Lethal (Ashley Knighton/Stephen Disney 3rd.
