Sunday, 7 January 2007  -  The day finally arrived for Heat 1 of the 2007 SUNSMART F11 Nationals at Nedlands Yacht Club in Perth on Melville Waters on the Swan River. The weather was what was predicted, albeit a little behind schedule as the morning's easterly did not extinguish until later in the afternoon at about 2:30pm, when the southerly sea breeze eventually meandered back up the river at approximately 12kts.
The fleet of 43 boats got their first start just after 3pm but were reigned in by the starters boat for a general recall before a clean start on the second attempt.
Most of the fleet took off to the right hand side while many of the locals headed for the left so it was anyones game as to who would make it to the top mark first.
Very close racing was experienced up the first work with 1341 FLYING THE COOP James Walters & Kyle  just squeezing around first with 1344 PANTHER Justin Sharrock & Kris Fay and 1335 SKYE HIGH Alex McFadyen & Matthew Stenta right on their tail.

The two reaches had plenty of position changes and by the bottom mark, 1325 TROPHERS TOY had joined in the front pack. The second work brought PANTHER out to lead SKYE HIGH around the top for the square run, heaps of close followers behind them and spliting sides early.

By the leward mark, PANTHER,  TROPHERS TOY, SKYE HIGH and FLYING THE COOP were dog fighting for the top gun position. PANTHER and TROPHERS TOY chose to come out very far to the right, beyond the port chanel marker and after tacking, had to heel their boats right over in order to scrape across the sandbars for 20m or so, apretty risky manouvre but done with rather youthful precision. Meanwhile, SKYE HIGH took the left side with FLYING THE COOP, 1318 HEROES & VILLAINS Robert & Matthew Crawford and 1311 UPBEAT Scott Schutz & Emma Knighton choosing the middle option.
As the boats converged towards the line, PANTHER and TROPHERS Toy were in a tacking duel with each other, with SKYE HIGH crossing inches from their sterns, with UPBEAT and HEROES & VILLAINS ready to take it all from Alex on the line.

With the boat end being favoured, 1344 PANTHER successfully held off all comers and crossed the line in first place. 1325 TROPHERS TOY took second with a very close finish for the next three boats over the line, resulting in 1341 FLYING THE COOP just wrenching third from equal fourth placings 1335 SKYE HIGH and 1311 UPBEAT. Local NYC boat 1217 RUBBER DUCKY Luc Tasker & Lucinda Crisp placed a creditable 10th with next NYC boat 1272 AKU AKU Mitchell Barnes & Josephine Mark in 24th Place over the line.
