Latest news from our Flying 11 friends in Tasmania over the winter.

NEWS FROM TASSIE

During the winter break, there has been a flurry of behind-the-scenes activity in the Flying 11 ranks. Several boats have moved to new owners, and in a particularly pleasing development a number of boats which were gathering dust in sheds now also have new owners, and will be actively sailed this season.

During the recent school holidays, Flying 11 crews were well represented in two very successful sailing schools run by Derwent Sailing Squadron (DSS) in Hobart, and Tamar Yacht Club (TYC) at Beauty Point. Yachting Australia coaches provided invaluable training to some very enthusiastic crews, and the improvement in skills gained over a few days was remarkable.

DSS followed up the next weekend with their Juicy Isle series, with two Flying 11s, Vengeance (1258), crewed by  Jeremy Coles and Michael Titchen and Instinct Too (1113), crewed by Jac Morgan and Martin Smith competing with good results.

Both these crews participated in the sailing school, and will be regular competitors this season.

Tamar Yacht Club's Opening Day saw six Flying 11s on the water, only two less than the Sabot fleet. A healthy rivalry is developing between the two fleets, with the Flying 11s determined to outnumber the Sabots before the end of the season!

Unfortunately conditions were particularly challenging for the first day, with 20 knot winds occasionally gusting to 28 knots taking a heavy toll on the fleet. Riders on the Storm (1253), crewed by Cameron and Sarah Gibson sailed brilliantly in the conditions to take a very well-deserved win. Most crews were still smiling at the end of the day, but hoping for slightly less challenging conditions at Beauty Point next weekend, when the TYC points series gets under way.

Riders on the Storm (1253), together with the newly acquired Beyond the Edge (1307), crewed by David Cromarty and Rhys Griffiths are actively planning their trip to Perth for the Nationals in January.

Midway Point also has three Flying 11s sailing this season, and will be the host club for the first weekend of the Flying 11 State Championships, which will form part of the Pittwater Regatta on 27th/28th January 2007.
