Mackay Sailors Set for Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

Mackay Yacht Club members are excited to again be cheering on a Mackay yacht in the iconic Brisbane to Gladstone ocean race. Mackay yacht “Matangi” is a Frers designed 38 foot masthead sloop with an impressive pedigree of Ocean racing in Australia including four Sydney – Hobart races.

Skipper Dave Turnbull says that “after 22 years of hard racing she has proven her strength and seaworthiness with a turn of speed that suits her handicap”. On board will be a highly skilled crew from Mackay Yacht Club with lots of ocean racing experience who plan to race the boat to its full potential. Racing onboard Matangi with Dave Turnbull will be Mackay Yacht Club members Greg (Sladie) Tobin, Steve Robertson, Lloyd Davey, Chris Foster and Geoff Osborne. “The race can be very tactical and demanding so the experience and knowledge of these sailors will be very important and I’m expecting an exciting ride with these blokes onboard” said the skipper.

Dave Turnbull says it is a real honour to represent Mackay Yacht Club particularly with the recent success of the Club, “this year at the National Championships Sophie Osborne & Stephanie Robertson won their division and Daniel Moran & Maya Turnbull placed 6th in their division. Just recently at the World Championship Myra Robertson was the highest placed woman in her division and Alistair Donald placed in the top 10”.

With so many sportsmen and women holding down Australian and World rankings and regular appearances at State and National Championships by many other club members the Mackay Yacht Club must be one of the most successful sporting clubs in the region. Dave Turnbull notes that “it is inspiring and certainly puts some pressure on to do well in the Brisbane to Gladstone race however at the end of the day the Club members are very supportive of all athletes and to perform at your best is all that’s expected. The Mackay Yacht Club is great like that and everyone is welcome, families love the friendly atmosphere and the great food, and if you do want to set sail there is learn to sail lessons offered by the Club”.

So if you like cold drinks and great food in a friendly and successful sports club overlooking the boats in the Marina then the Mackay Yacht Club is the place to be. If your dream is to race Sydney to Hobart or ‘Fiji’ looks nice then the Mackay Yacht Club can help you on your way. Visit the Club at the breakwater entrance, Ph 49554950 or browse

Social Sailing at MYC 2018

Social sailing is an activity that the club runs on some Saturdays throughout the year. This is something the anyone can participate in.

Further details are available under Sailing in the main menu above.

We meet at the marina at 12 noon and are usually back in by 4. So if you want to join us contact Bob on 4956 2618 or and reserve a spot.

You don’t even have to have been out on the water on any sort of boat. You will now have the chance to go for a quiet sail on a yacht to get an idea of what sailing is all about. You will be taken out with an experienced skipper and crew and you will get a chance to try steering the vessel and trimming the sails. Or you can just sit back and relax.

The following dates are possible social sailing days.
