Twilight Race a Great Success

Ross Chisholm, Sunday, 21 April 2013

For those who took part in Mackay Yacht Club's first Friday After Work Twilight race, it couldn't have been a better introduction.  A gentle 7 knot northerly breeze and a high tide for the 4 boats that started, together with a spectacular sunset, set the scene for the race.  Handicaps were calculated in advance, with the slowest boats starting first, and the faster boats trying to catch them before finishing the course.  Sorceress (Eric Smith) set a fast pace without any errors, and made it difficult for the rest of the fleet to catch them.  However, as Matangi (Dave Turnbull) and Trivial Pursuit (Ross Chisholm) fought their own private battle, the fast trimaran, Nemesis (Troy Neilson) hunted down Sorceress to cross the finish 2 seconds ahead.  Another 30 seconds behind, Matangi held on for 3rd place by a matter of seconds from Trivial Pursuit.

Everybody on board praised the event as a great success, and agreed that this should be a regular event on the Mackay sporting calendar.  The next race is scheduled for Friday 26 April from 1700 Hours.  For details contact Rear Commodore Ross Chisholm on 0429 584 787.

Social Sailing at MYC 2018

Social sailing is an activity that the club runs on some Saturdays throughout the year. This is something the anyone can participate in.

Further details are available under Sailing in the main menu above.

We meet at the marina at 12 noon and are usually back in by 4. So if you want to join us contact Bob on 4956 2618 or and reserve a spot.

You don’t even have to have been out on the water on any sort of boat. You will now have the chance to go for a quiet sail on a yacht to get an idea of what sailing is all about. You will be taken out with an experienced skipper and crew and you will get a chance to try steering the vessel and trimming the sails. Or you can just sit back and relax.

The following dates are possible social sailing days.
