TEAM WANGI - A HISTORY OF THE WANGI RSL AMATEUR SAILING CLUB
Editor: Udo Borgert
This publication, richly illustrated with many photographs, presents the history of the Wangi RSL Amateur Sailing Club from its foundation in 1967 to 2010. It portrays the efforts of members that led the Club from small beginnings, through difficult times, to become a flourishing part of the local community. Apart from the historical overview it discusses the qualities that have given the Club its identity, in particular its dedication to junior sailing, its staunch volunteers, its willingness to embrace all who wished to participate in sailing and the fact that, from the very outset, it enshrined the equality of men and women, both on and off the water.
The book also gives a detailed account of the racing events and regattas throughout its history and highlights the remarkable achievements of the Club's sailors in state, national and international championships. In addition, it examines other important aspects in the Club's history, such as the building of its clubhouse, the boat shows, its fundraising and social activities, its administrative structure and the role that women have played in the development of the Club.
In a more light-hearted vein the book includes a compilation of sailors' yarns. These anecdotes are proof that sailors are not only good story tellers but have a great sense of humour. This sense of humour is also very much evident from the (in)famous Mongrel Awards.
And last but not least, the text contains memory snippets and eyewitness accounts of members who were present when various events occurred and who, more often than not, were deeply involved in them.
The book shows that, at this Club, sailing is enjoyed by young and old. It has created many friendships with members coming to feel that they are part of a large, caring family. Team Wangi!
