Our Sailors at Victorian Hansa Class Championships

by DYC

Docklands Yacht Club members and boats attended the Victorian Hansa Class Championships at Latrobe Valley Yacht Club.

Conditions across the weekend varied from warm and windy, to chilly and calm, with some torrential rain, lightning and thunderstorms thrown in!

DYC fielded competiors in each of the four divisions - the 2.3, 303 single person, 303 two-person and made up the entire 3 boat Liberty fleet.

Reigning 2.3 Victorian Champion, DYC's Louis Patterson was out of luck in retaining his title against two local sailors and the reigning Australian 2.3 champion from the ACT, Allister Peek.

In the 303 singles, DYC's Beck West and Christine Elliott were unable to catch their 'arch nemisis', Stewart Cathie from Albury Wodonga Yacht Club, who won all bar 1 race across the series.

It was a lot closer in the Liberty fleet, with Russell Phillips, Cadeyrn Gaskin and Shauna Phillips all representing DYC. Cadeyrn lead the field at the end of the first day on a countback from Russell, with only a point seperating Shauna in 3rd place. Despite winning 2 of the 3 races on the last day, Shauna narrowly missed winning the title by 1 point from Russell, with Cadeyrn 1 point behind. Despite missing out on the Liberty trophy, Shauna was awarded Best Female Overall.

Beck & Christine did double duty as the Victorian reps for the Australian Hansa Class Association and presided over the presentation ceremony.

It was great to sail at Latrobe Valley again, and we look forward to welcoming LVYC members back to DYC in future. Thanks to all club members and volunteers at both clubs for making the weekend possible.
