Come Try Racing day @ DYC
Docklands Yacht Club hosted our first Come Try Racing day on 20th September.
The day started with participants being given a tutorial about starting sequences and flags, racing tips and tactics, trimming the boat and a general introduction to racing.
Following a break for lunch, 6 boats were launched and the sailors began putting what they had learned into practice. Several drills were held, were boats did 360 degree turns around a mark, before sailing to the next mark and circling that and returning. Then they practiced tacking and gybing, before lining up for some start practice and racing.
Over the course of the afternoon, several short races were held, with competitors close (and occasionally TOO close) on the start line. The wind shifted several times during the racing, keeping the sailors on their toes, and rewarding those who correctly picked the shifts. The racing was great fun, with smiles and laughter the order of the day.
Thanks to David Staley for the tutorial and race management for this inaugural Come Try Racing Day, which all agreed was a lot of fun and informative. We hope to schedule another event in 2016.
