Beck West tops the Short Course Series

by

Beck West has won the Docklands Yacht Club Short Course Series premier division.

Sailing in every one of the 27 races held for the Hansa 303 class over the season, Beck placed consistently and ended the series with a 24 point lead. Louis Patterson was second overall, with Christine Elliott third.

In the Liberty class, Russell Phillips claimed the win with a 21 point buffer to Cadeyrn Gaskin, with Shauna Phillips in third.

With two boats required to register a score, the Hansa 2.3 class was reduced to a two day series even though a number of single boats had sailed throughout the season. Stuart Cathie from Albury-Wodonga Yacht Club claimed the overall win on the basis of six straight wins on the final day, while DYC’s Cadeyrn Gaskin came in second in the 2.3s while he focused on the Liberty competition. Mark Thorpe from Sale was third overall.

Two of the seven scheduled race days throughout the season were abandoned as a result of poor weather, but 27 races were completed for the 303s, 22 for the Liberties and 11 for the 2.3s with four to six races each sailing day completed thanks to DYC Race Officers David Ashburner and David Staley.

With a condensed group of ten to fifteen minute races held each race day, the Docklands Short Course Series is an excellent introduction for any sailor who wishes to get started in racing. And it’s a lot of fun and a great opportunity for all sailors to practice race starts and buoy roundings. The 2014-2015 series will get underway in October.
