Silver for DYC Sailors at Victorian Championships
Docklands sailors performed well at the 2012 Victorian Access Class Championships held at Lysterfield Sailing Club from over the weekend of March 17 & 18. A Class Coaching Clinic was also conducted on Friday the 16th.
Twenty sailors (17 Victorians and 3 from Queensland) competed in the championships with strong competition in the Access 2.3 and Liberty classes in particular. Many of the sailors used these championships as a lead-up event for the Access Class World Championships being held in Sydney next month.
Light to moderate south-westerly breezes prevailed on the Saturday, with a progressively freshening south-easterly on the final day capping off a good weekend of racing. Eight races were conducted for each of the four divisions by a combined race management team from Lysterfield Sailing Club and Docklands Yacht Club.
Lysterfield Commodore Geoff Leverington won the Access 2.3 competition with consistent 2nd and 3rd places in every race. Second overall and 2 points behind was Sally Wilkinson from Docklands. This was Sally’s first championship in the Access classes and she is learning fast. After a slow start, she won three of the four races on the Sunday and was awarded the Most Improved and First Female trophies. Sally will sail with Russell Phillips in the SKUD 18 at next month’s International Championships in Sydney.
There were three boats in each of the 303 divisions. Murray Mitchelhill (Geelong) finished 4 points ahead of Mara Chachs (Lysterfield) with Belinda Hill (Southport QLD) another 2 points behind in the single person division. In the two person fleet, Hayley Webb & Bruce James (Lysterfield / Latrobe Valley) established a 2 point lead over Sarah & Craig Millsom (Latrobe Valley) with Roy Jewell & Jack Webb (Docklands / Lysterfield) in third.
Competition in the Liberty division was very close, with the top three on equal points after the first day. The Race 6 finish between Barry Coates (Southport QLD) and Russell Phillips (Docklands) was so close that four pairs of eyes could not separate them and a dead-heat was scored. The half point was just enough for Barry Coates to clinch the title from Cadeyrn Gaskin (Docklands). Russell Phillips finished third.
Cadeyrn Gaskin, Beck West, Roy Jewell, Neil Patterson, Sally Wilkinson and Russell Phillips are all travelling to Middle Harbour Yacht Club next month to compete in the Access Class World & International Championships. The event is being conducted in conjunction with the Australian Access Class Championships.
